I have been a member of this gym since April 10th, and while it has some positive aspects, there are several flaws that need to be addressed. The gym's location is convenient, and the overall atmosphere is pleasant and inviting. However, there are a few key areas where the gym falls short.
Firstly, parking can be a challenge, especially if you arrive by car. Finding an available parking spot is often difficult, as the gym shares parking with CVS and other nearby stores. On the other hand, public transportation proves to be a better option since the bus conveniently drops you off at the gym.
One major concern is the pricing structure. To access the gym, you are required to commit to a one-year contract, which costs $54.99. If you prefer not to be tied down by a contract, the monthly fee is $64.99. Additionally, both options come with an annual fee of $29.00, which further adds to the expenses.
The gym's capacity is another issue. Compared to other gyms in the area, it is relatively small, leading to overcrowding during peak hours. This means that it can be challenging to follow your exercise routines, especially when specific machines are occupied by others. Even during weekends, when it's expected to be less crowded, the gym is often near full capacity.
Furthermore, the gym lacks proper organization. Equipment and machines are often not in their designated places, making it inconvenient for members. For example, the hooks for the Lat Pull Down and Standing High To Low Cable Flyes machines are frequently missing because they have been taken to other machines. The absence of dedicated staff to address these issues compounds the problem.
The level of assistance at the gym is also lacking. Upon arrival, the reception desk is often unattended. Out of ten visits, only once have I been greeted with a friendly "good morning," "good afternoon," or "good night." However, I must mention that there was one staff member, a young lady with green eyes, who consistently exhibited excellent manners and was always polite to everyone.
On a positive note, the gym does maintain good cleanliness. There are diligent individuals who constantly ensure that the machines, floor, and overall gym environment are kept tidy. This aspect deserves commendation.
In conclusion, while this gym is not a terrible option, there are certainly better alternatives available. Many other facilities offer more space and resources for either a lower cost or a similar price. However, one aspect worth mentioning is the opportunity to enjoy a scenic view of the beach while using the treadmill, which is a unique and enjoyable feature of this gym.
Overall, improvements in parking availability, pricing, capacity management, organization, and customer service would greatly enhance the gym's appeal to...
Read moreOverall, very bad experience. Let me start with the good points: reasonable price (about $43 per month), relatively clean, wide variety of equipment.
Now for the negatives: very dark atmosphere- that is, the lighting is dismal and depressing, which is not conducive to a positive workout. People are there to socialize and try to pick up, not really to work out seriously. Too many 'free passes', which leads to a lot of losers off the street, with no gym etiquette. Weight area is on a raised floor, which is probably made of wood, since there are many 'spongy' soft spots underfoot around the squat racks, etc. -- not good for a serious workout. These spots are a result of another problem -- muscleheads literally throwing hundreds of pound of weight onto the floor with every set, as if saying, "look at me, I'm so strong", when in reality it's showing that they can't handle the weight. This alone is very dangerous for those nearby, as you may be in the middle of your own bench press, and suddenly hear and feel the crashing, and think that a 45 is going to bounce and hit you.
Management is largely young and inexperienced, and does nothing to correct the jug-heads that throw weights around on a daily basis.
The worst part of the gym experience, however, is that the staff seems to think that LOUD, obnoxious music is part of a good workout, regardless if you brought your own earbuds with your own music to play! Now, I've been working out in gyms for a long time, and have been a member of gyms in NYC, NJ, and California. Any serious gym does not have loud music playing, thus allowing people to listen to their own preference.
Gold's Gym of Howard Beach, however believes that YOU don't know what you want to listen to, so they BLAST their 40 year old electronic ping pong sound techno trash SO LOUD that you CANNOT bear it, and worse, you CANNOT even hear your own headset, since theirs is SO LOUD! Over the 6 months that I was a member, the staff DID lower it somewhat when asked to, until last month (August, 2013). At that point, the staff at the front desk told me that a meeting was held recently and they were instructed to BLAST the music after 3:00 pm, regardless of what anyone requested!!
If I'm going to pay to workout, I want to workout. When I want to go to a club, I will go to a club, and I will expect to hear loud music until my ears bleed -- I won't expect to be told to do some bench presses while I'm there; that would be ludicrous, right?
If you want to pay to be annoyed, then join this gym. Otherwise, look elsewhere. Also, when canceling your membership be aware that you have to pay a $150 penalty for not putting up with their crap. BUYER BEWARE,...
