20th Street Beach & Bikes — Attraction in Newport Beach

The wife and I rented a tandem bike to celebrate our 28th anniversary. The online reservation process was great and when I called to tell them I'd be a bit late arriving, I was treated courteously on the phone. Upon our arrival, the young man (I didn't get his name) was very friendly and got us checked in quickly. When we were shown our bike, I was a little let down as it was a standard tandem. I had been expecting a beach cruiser style bike (my fault). After a quick test ride we needed to adjust the rear seat as the handlebars were hitting the wife's knees when we peddled. I also needed them to adjust the front hand brake as it wasn't working. The same gentleman who checked us in tried to fix the brake but wasn't able to do so. His partner, who was an older guy, said something to the effect of there were still brakes and a front brake is dangerous anyhow! (Seriously, I have well over a hundred miles on mountain bikes...I know how to brake!)

Overall, I was very pleased with the service we were offered but felt the quality of the bike left us a little let down. It appeared to me the rest of their bikes looked great so perhaps it's just the tandem that was a'little long in the tooth.' I want to give 5 stars because the customer service and smooth process to rent and delivery were great, but the bike conditions were very poor. I rented two bikes with baby seats for 1 week. The online rental process was easy and the drop off was punctual and the guy dropping off was very kind. But unfortunately the bikes were in very poor condition. They were super rusty, the kickstand on mine wouldn't stay up properly when I was riding, I kept having to nudge it in with my foot. The baby seats didn't feel safe at all, they weren't sturdy and my sons had a big crack at the top which made it clear it was very old. They got the job done, but I definitely had higher expectations for the bikes when I rented them. But aside from the condition of the bikes, the staff was very kind...

Extremely poor customer service. I attempted a bike rental. They refused to honor a group-on coupon I purchased through this site. Short stocky dark haired "manager" was rude and threatened to call police and would not rent us bikes when I tried to explain it was owner's responsibility to either honor these coupons or remove their name from the site. His response was simply, “WELCOME TO MY WORLD.” He admitted that similar incidents have occurred with failure to correct problem. The younger attendants were polite and professional. As of this writing, no refund has been received.

I will be following up with a cease and desist letter and likely lawsuit based on their actions and consequent damages.
