A separated beach cove in the Corona Del Mar section of Newport Beach! Just south of The Wedge of Balboa Beach and inlet of Newport Bay and Harbor, this beach isn’t as good for surfing, as waves are broken up by the jetty(s), though is maybe a better family oriented place. A good place for kids and their folks to go wading and light swimming! There’s an even smaller beach, with even more sheltered water to swim in, just to the north of the parking lot, up and over the rock formations. Beachgoers will have use of public restrooms, outdoor showers and an outdoor food stand with tables. Paid parking is self-service in the beachside lots. Walk-in’s can park free along residential streets where permitted, though must walk the steep sidewalk or steps downhill to the cove, then climb back up the hill when leaving. The beach is less crowded on weekdays, with no problem for parking. Sunny weekends can be packed, so midday parking then may be slim pickings! Because of the limited shoreline, late arrivals may also need to vie for space in the surf towards the south end of the beach. Further past the south end is the cliffside lookout of Inspiration Point, a great place to see the beach park and parking lot overview. Overall safety is important at the beach, with lifeguards in attendance during daytime operating hours! The park is almost all out in the open, with only a small picnic area on the north side somewhat shaded by palm’s. Many who go to the sand, bring beach umbrella’s, tents and of course,...
Read moreFantastic beach! We went on a Friday afternoon in mid-October. It was sunny and mid-70s and we had a great time wading in the water, collecting shells, and generally enjoying the atmosphere. Water temp was great (if you’re not used to recreating in open water in the U.S. you will probably think it’s cold, but comparing it to rivers in my home state of Colorado and the beaches in my birth state of N.H…. water temp was better than I expected).
Lots of fire pits available. Many trash cans. There’s occasional litter from crappy human beings but overall it’s very clean. Parking lot was mostly empty and hourly weekday parking was super cheap ($2.90/hour).
There was still lots of things going on for an October weekday - snack bar was open, three of the volleyball nets were in use, people were boogie boarding, swimming, playing soccer, and lots of kids playing. It was not crowded at all but also not deserted - great beach atmosphere in my opinion.
Bathrooms are what you expect for a public park… meh but totally usable. There’s plenty of showers available outside for rinsing off sand.
We parked on the north side because we wanted to go over the rocks to check out Pirate’s Cove. That’s a cool place to go visit but we ultimately made camp on the main beach for the rest of our 3 hour visit. I recommend going barefoot when traversing the rocks over to Pirates cove for better grip.
We had a great time and I highly...
