I found this small neighborhood park inadvertently in my continuing search for coastal view spots. To my surprise, the scenery from up here was panoramic! Not only did I get an ocean view, I also had an overview of Newport Harbor and Balboa Peninsula! I enjoyed a picnic lunch in this peaceful place, before leaving to join the crowds. There’s no public restrooms at the park, tho may be available at some of the establishments down the steps, with additional business appreciated in exchange. The Newport Theater Arts Center is next door and is not open for public use without admission. The free parking lot seems to be half of the park size, adequate for regular use. Street parking is also available, pending restrictions. Care should be taken when looking while walking out and down the hill. As The Duke would say, take'er easy there, Pilgrim!

A hidden gem of Newport Beach! The park off Cliff Dr overlooks PCH & the boats in Newport Bay. It has a some benches to just sit and unwind and maybe even catch a sunset! There is plenty of parking as well if you don’t want to get out of the car. Since the parking spots face the Bay you get the same gorgeous view in your car!

Nice, quiet local spot to overlook Newport Beach, read a book, have lunch, take a selfie 🤳 or watch a sunset. Not a loud playground type of park. Free parking is limited in the small lot spaces adjacent to the park but there is more parking along the street. No restrooms so plan accordingly.

John Wayne Park: A Newport Beach Sunset Spectacle John Wayne Park in Newport Beach might be known for its namesake and its convenient location, but it truly shines as a surprisingly delightful spot to catch the sunset. I recently had the pleasure of witnessing the day's grand finale from this unassuming park, and it was a truly serene and beautiful experience. While not perched directly on the sand, John Wayne Park offers an elevated vantage point that provides a fantastic panoramic view of the western sky. The gentle slope of the park allowed for an unobstructed vista, and the scattering of mature trees in the distance framed the fiery spectacle beautifully. What struck me most was the peaceful atmosphere. Unlike the bustling beaches closer to the pier, the park offered a sense of calm and tranquility. There were families enjoying picnics, couples strolling hand-in-hand, and individuals simply sitting on blankets, all sharing a quiet appreciation for the natural beauty unfolding before us. The lack of loud crowds or crashing waves allowed for a more contemplative experience, making it a perfect escape after a busy day. As the sun began its descent, the sky transformed into a breathtaking canvas of colors. Hues of vibrant orange and fiery red bled into softer shades of pink and lavender, painting the scattered clouds with a warm, golden glow. The air seemed to still, and a collective hush fell over the park as everyone paused to soak in the moment. The silhouettes of the distant buildings and palm trees added a touch of quintessential Southern California charm to the scene. While you don't get the direct sound of the ocean, the gentle breeze carrying the faint scent of salt in the air was a subtle reminder of the nearby coast. John Wayne Park isn't the first place that comes to mind when you think of Newport Beach sunsets, but that's precisely what makes it such a hidden gem. It offers a more intimate and less crowded experience without sacrificing the stunning views. Pros: Excellent panoramic views: Elevated vantage point provides an unobstructed view of the sunset. Peaceful and tranquil atmosphere: Less crowded than the main beaches. Convenient location: Easily accessible with parking available. Pleasant park setting: Offers space for picnics and relaxation. Beautiful framing: Mature trees and distant silhouettes enhance the view. Cons: Not directly on the beach: You don't get the immediate sounds and feel of the ocean. Limited amenities specifically for sunset viewing: No dedicated seating or viewing platforms. Overall: Watching the sunset at John Wayne Park was a surprisingly lovely experience. If you're looking for a more peaceful and less crowded spot to witness the magic of a Newport Beach sunset, I highly recommend giving this park a visit. Bring a blanket, relax, and prepare to be captivated by the beauty of the fading day. It's a reminder that sometimes, the most beautiful moments can be found in the most...

Love this spot. Never knew it was here until a friend moved close by. Not a big park but very cool spot to hang out, layout, have lunch or dinner & watch the sunset. It's usually busy during the days with folks laying out, having lunch, hanging out for a sunset, etc.

There's a parking lot too but also street parking, so I've never had problems parking here. Amongst other small parks in this area, this one of the smaller parks, maybe not best for larger groups but great for smaller groups & definitely one of the better...
