William S. Rich & Son — Attraction in North Plainfield

If I could have given them 0 stars I would have chosen that option!

I was a long time customer with several outstanding tickets for jewelry for which I had taken loans. I had paid thousands to Rich and son in interest over the years and had always made it clear that I never wanted to sell or not get my jewelry back even when they hiked their prices from 33.3% to 45%!.

They had always done business in a professional manner by sending out written notices so that customers had notice of their interest payment due. About a year and a half ago I moved to another state. I went to Rich and sons and gave them my new address and contact information so that I would receive all notices in a timely manner. I had also provided my phone number in case there was any problem.

I wrote down the address for them. I made it clear that I still wanted to pay interest on all items until I could finally get my things back.

Apparently, in June of 2015, they had internal troubles at the store. Management changed. Notices were not sent out, contact information was recorded incorrectly etc etc. These were all the excuses I received over the phone. I spoke to the new manager who really could not tell me why they did not have my address nor could she tell me how they finally found my correct address!

I just received a letter a week and a half ago (3rd week in Feb. 2016) The letter was dated OCT. 15 2015!!! Since I did not respond in time to the OCT letter with an interest payment they scrapped all of my jewelry except for one piece which they said they would sell back to me! I was devastated. Each and every piece had sentimental value. They were priceless to me.

I was told I by the manager that I would get a call back on 2/23 or 2/24 with a "fair price for the one item that they did not destroy which they held "in stock." So far NO CALL BACK. This manager said she was brought in to clean up the mess left by the last employees. Her call back is over a week late so far. Obviously I think the owner is negligent again in her employee choice. I trusted this company to operate in a consistent matter. Why did a letter dated Oct. 2015 take four months to be sent I asked repeatedly? I was told "I don't know." How did they finally get my new address I asked? I was told "I don't know." Each and every piece had sentimental value. They were priceless to me.

If you value your item/items do not do business with this pawn shop. Their prices are probably the highest out there for loans on jewelry and they do not know what they are doing. I used the location in North Plainfield NJ, but since all stores share the same owner and she is the one who came in and decided to sell my things for reason of non payment, I am posting on all of the stores because their business practice is terribly flawed. Again, since I had been a long time customer from which they had made thousands of dollars in interest over the years, I don't think they tried very hard to contact me if they tried at all. I had a great experience dealing with Michelle I was skeptical in the beginning do do some reviews and listening to other people and I sat in the car several minutes wondering if I should go inside, when I decided to go inside Michelle got up from her chair which is behind the window and greeted me with a smile and from there I expressed to her why I was hesitant and we talked and we laughed and I experienced nothing but professionalism I’m so glad that I went inside and I got top dollar for my ring I would recommend this place to anyone who needs a pawnshop.
