The Word of Life mural, famously known as “Touchdown Jesus,” is an iconic landmark that perfectly embodies the spirit and tradition of Notre Dame. Situated on the façade of the Hesburgh Library, this breathtaking piece of art is both a symbol of faith and a celebration of academic excellence. Designed by artist Millard Sheets, the mural features a towering image of Christ surrounded by scholars and saints, symbolizing the integration of knowledge and spirituality. The sheer scale and detail of the piece are awe-inspiring—at 132 feet tall, it commands attention and offers a moment of reflection for anyone who visits. One of the most striking aspects of the mural is its placement. Overlooking Notre Dame Stadium, “Touchdown Jesus” has become a beloved part of the game-day experience, visible from inside the stadium and serving as a reminder of the university’s unique blend of faith, tradition, and excellence. Beyond its connection to football, the mural is a work of art worth appreciating up close. The vibrant colors and intricate design tell a story of unity and purpose, inspiring both students and visitors alike. It’s a must-see for anyone visiting campus and an excellent photo opportunity that captures the essence of Notre Dame. Whether you’re there for a football game, a campus tour, or simply exploring South Bend, the Word of Life mural is a powerful and memorable sight that leaves a lasting impression. It’s not just a piece of art—it’s a symbol of what makes Notre Dame truly special.

During my recent vacation, I found myself in South Bend Indiana and decided to spend some time on the Campus of Notre Dame University. During My visit I found it very difficult to find public parking. Most of the lots that I encountered were gated and available for permit holders only. I finally found a parking lot that was staffed by a very nice and helpful gentleman. He was kind enough to issue me a temporary parking pass for one of the lots that he managed. He also gave me a brochure, campus map and directed me to the Word of Life Mural, which is probably better known as Touchdown Jesus. While walking across campus I passed by a very impressive statue of Moses. From where I parked it was between a quarter to a half mile walk through the campus lawn. The mural is located on the side of the Hesburgh Library. It was created by Millard Sheets and stands 134 feet high and is 68 feet wide. I had seen this beautiful mural several times on TV, and I Must say it is even more impressive and beautiful in Person.

This giant, multi story mural is on the side of the university library, located at the heart of the University of Notre Dame. This iconic mural and building can be seen throughout the campus, so getting to it is fairly easy. The meeting place for the Notre Dame Marching Band on football Saturdays! Lovingly referred to as "Touchdown Jesus", this mural can be seen from Notre Dame Stadium, however the lower you sit in the stadium the harder it is to see this mural. Come to Notre Dame and see this piece of college history today!
