I have to agree with those who say that the Lanikai Pillbox Hike gets mixed reviews mainly because of the longer route to reach the pillbox. Initially, I had intended to go for the shorter and easier trail to catch the sunrise at the pillbox. However, due to a mix-up in my plans, we ended up on the longer route. While it was a challenging hike, the breathtaking views made it all worth it. One crucial piece of advice for anyone attempting this hike is to wear appropriate footwear. The terrain can be tricky, and having the right shoes is essential to avoid potential injuries. Also, don’t forget to bring plenty of water, especially as it gets hotter during the day. The views along the way are simply stunning, and there’s a sense of serenity that comes with being surrounded by nature. We started early, and the trail was relatively quiet, with only a few fellow hikers ahead of us and a couple behind. It’s important to be respectful towards others, as the trail is popular, especially closer to the first pillbox. Speaking of the pillbox, expect to take turns for photos when you reach the top; everyone wants that incredible view! But with patience, you can fully enjoy the accomplishment of making it to the summit and the natural beauty all around. This hike is free, but parking can be quite challenging to find, as there’s no designated parking area. We ended up parking on the street, making sure not to block any driveways and respecting the neighborhood. As others have mentioned, there are some damaged steps along the way, but they don’t enhance the trail in any way. The trail is steep, so proper shoes are a must, as is staying hydrated. Despite its challenges, the Lanikai Pillbox Hike is a rewarding adventure with breathtaking views that make it all worthwhile.

Ok, so honest review here. Bottom Line, if the main trailhead didn't exist and this "back way" was the only way up, it would have all 5 star reviews. It instead has poor reviews because the other trailhead is definitely better... but that doesn't mean this one is bad... it's important to understand that. Yes, of course, if I were to pick one trail entrance over the other, I would pick the other side every single time. But if your not doing it expecting it to be the same as the other side (or have never done it from the other side) then you'll still love this hike and views. This "back way" is a bit more challenging, a bit more steep, and about 30 minutes longer than the other path. The views during the accent are not as nice as the other side (but still incredible), however, once you get to the top (pillbox), the views are exactly the same... spectacular! This way is less traveled/less crowded though, which is a plus. We parked at the Safeway and just made the 10 minute walk into the neighborhood to start the trail. Wear good shoes!

Don't be too concerned about all the negative reviews for this awesome route to the Lanikai Pillboxes. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the reviews were from people living on that block who just don't want cars parking on their street. As some have mentioned, the back way is a little longer and steeper but I would still consider this an easy-to-moderate hike. The rolling hills on the way up block the trade winds so it can get hot depending on the time of day. It also offers you a better view of Kailua town with the Ko'olau Range as your backdrop.
