My family visited Six Flags owned Frontier City on Labor Day. This was my first visit despite having season passes. We arrived around 11:30am and the parking navigation was well planned and easy. The staff was friendly and informative at the gate and getting through security was simple. You go through a gift shop to get in and out of the park. It was great to see the fright fest merch was coming out, as we are excited to visit the Halloween festivities coming up. This was the only "mostly" stocked shop in the park. The rest were bare or closed. The confections shop had an case entirely empty but for two ancient caramel apples. We stopped at a food stall for a foot long corn dog and they didn't have any and said they would be delivered within the hour. We rode some of the rides and went to a different restaurant. They were out of fries and not taking any orders. Closed other than the drink refilling station. We then made our way to the big food hall area and ate there. As with most amusement parks, the food is over priced and mid quality at best. The rides are ok and the lines took a while due to loading and unloading passengers. I think it's was a lack of communication between staff and guests because you know how I said how friendly everyone was at the gate? That ended at the gate. Instructions were given with the joyless monotone of a minimum wage ish employee in stupid heat on a holiday (because that's what was happening) if at all. The park's condition is run down. One bathroom I visited was windowless, mirror-less, soapless, and paper towel-less. There's a dingy, roadside feel to the whole place. As for accessibility, my son is a part time wheelchair user and thankfully the size of the park is small enough that he can navigate it with breaks. But the pavement is a nightmare for a wheelchair user, the accessible entrances were hidden away or even blocked completely. I saw a blacktop mound, that couldn't have been the required width, that looked like it was poorly hand made and had a handicapped symbol slapped on it that it would be difficult at best to use, and at worst, dangerous. Six Flags is worth over 4 billion dollars so the state of this park and the employee's pay rates (starting at 9$ an hour!?) should embarrass them. Overall people do not mind spending money when they go to theme park. But if you're going to spend the money I want a clean bathroom with a mirror. I want supplies in that bathroom. I want the food stalls to have food. I want the shops to have merchandise I can purchase. I want the park to be accessible. I want to interact with happy, well paid employees who want to be there. Six Flags should literally be ashamed of themselves for charging what they do for the quality and subpar experience that you get at...
Read moreThe park is fun and has a lot of great rides. The lines weren’t too bad, and the overall experience was pretty good. However, it didn’t start out great and many rides and shows were not in operation (date of visit was Sunday, August 2, 2020). Here’s the jist.
The girls running the first ride we chose, the Quick Draw, were incredibly rude (shocking considering the park had just opened less than an hour prior), they gave us no instruction, and the ride didn’t even work. It took us around in a cart, but the guns didn’t work for either one of us (2 in my party). We explained this kindly to the girls and they couldn’t have cared less. It was frustrating and they were again so rude!
We kept a positive attitude and tried not to let our first encounter bother us, but the next ride we chose (I think it’s the Steel Lasso, but it’s the one just beyond the Quick Draw that’s like the carnival swing rides but also raises you up). When we arrived, there was no one in line and the girl operating the ride was strapping a guy and his son in the swing together. There were no other swings occupied and the ride was ready for more passengers. Instead of letting us on, she started the ride. We were pretty confused, because she hadn’t even acknowledged us. We asked if we could get on for the ride since it hadn’t actually begun, and she said she’d rather not let us on this one. She was so rude! I couldn’t believe it. We were at a family fun theme park and were being treated so poorly. This incident wasn’t about social distancing. She was just being a jerk. We were fed up by this point and sure didn’t feel safe under her operation, so we continued on and didn’t bother riding that ride. All I could think was how bad these employees must be treated. People who are treated bad treat others bad, and those treated good, treat others good. I sure want management to make a note of that.
Thankfully, the rest of our day was very enjoyable. Several shops were closed and shows were canceled, but we certainly made the very best of it. My favorite ride was the Brain Drain. It made the whole trip worth it 😀. I was super bummed the pirate ship ride was closed, because I remember it from my childhood, but the rollercoasters that were operating were fun (except for the wooden one—that was a bit rough).
The parking is very expensive, and the drinks were shockingly overpriced, which we all assume, right? This, however, was a whole different level of expensive.
2 bottles of water = $10 1 soda = $20
Also, something that really annoyed me was that there were no park maps offered. There’s a big directory, but it’s not very helpful when moving about the park. I’d go back. This was my first time going since Six Flags took over and I feel like the change took a negative toll...
Read moreFirst, I think if you come here understanding some things, you will not be too disappointed. One, is to expect Diamondback to not be running. Two, expect the park to be very small compared to other Six Flags. Three, the park does show its age.
But, for a theme park lover or if you appreciate roller coaster history, this place is great. It's perfect if you want some "mild" thrills and nothing super crazy like you'd get at a normal Six Flags. The fact that you have the lower track of Lightnin' Loops from Great Adventure, a coaster that is like one of three left in the USA, is amazing. This interesting-looking coaster is quite surprising once you take a ride! It's a shame it is down a lot of time. My first visit was yesterday, and I am so glad I was able to get a ride on this gem before it closed for the day.
The other rides did have trouble while I was there. Gunslinger, Diamondback, and the ship all had trouble. Silver Bullet was down, but that has been down all week so I expected that. The water rides, understandably given the weather, were not running.
The only ride I did NOT enjoy and will not recommend if it's cold, is the ferris wheel. The wheel was a complete nightmare with high winds and low temps. Once you got going and stopped at the top, the winds were BRUTAL and SO COLD.
Rides, of course, did show their age. The worst of which is probably the dark ride. Some things didn't light up and the sheriff had some mechanical issues - but again, if you go knowing this, you won't be hit with the surprise. Aside from there, a lot of the rides are rusty, have torn seats, are chipped, etc.
On to the theme. You have a Six Flags park, but the Six Flags theming and signs are so minimal that you wouldn't know it was owned by Six Flags. The western theme is beautiful. The park is full of western buildings, fake western ads/art, and even a gun show and a magic show (neither of which I had a chance to see). There is no DC and no Looney Tunes, and I hope Six Flags continues to NOT add those to the park and leave the western theme.
My BIGGEST PROBLEM with the park that I need Six Flags to pay attention to is this - MERCH. There is NO RIDE MERCH. This is A SIN. The only ride merch was: a Gunslinger hat, kids size Wildcat hat, a (very well done) baseball with pictures of some coasters, and at the checkout was 2 bins of Silver Bullet keychains with names that were mixed up so you'll take a lifetime trying to find your name.
The lack of ride merch needs to be fixed. I NEED a Diamondback shirt. Six Flags, you KNOW that you can make better merch. Please, give us coaster or ride shirts for...
