Grandkids, ages 4 to 8, had a blast at the Mahaffie Stagecoach Farmstead in Olathe. Olathe residents get a discount. We watched a blacksmith demo, used wooden mallets to repair a wagon wheel, washed some cloths “clothes” on washboards, then hung them on a clothes line. We walked around the property’s large, very well kept yard, mingling with some very friendly sheep and some skittish chickens. The staff, came out and engaged the kids in playing period games, like hoops and sticks. They were very entertaining! The garden pathways were all covered with thick layers of straw, so it was a nice place to walk through. We saw peas, tomatoes, squash, pumpkins, dill and carrots growing. The farmstead house has roped off bedrooms in the upstairs. The main level of the house has an antique foot peddle sewing machine that you can sit down and experiment with, it’s alongside an old organ which is also foot powered! There are a few other hands-on things you can play with. The cellar-kitchen area has a food demonstration going non stop. The staff was very friendly and interactive. They offered us fresh homegrown vegetables grown in the garden on the property! The cook was making soup and telling a story about the property and what the farmstead was for. The kids enjoyed that part so much, we went back by the kitchen, and were quite happy to follow a kitchen-hand out to feed the soup to the hogs! We also made our way into a very large, well kept barn, where we watched a video presentation of the Olden days, we also saw antique farm equipment, watched the horses being hitched up to the stagecoach, which we also rode on, around the property. Pumping the old fashioned pump handle to draw water, was a big hit too! We will definitely be back. There are scheduled programs for the fall, including a cemetery tour and an overnight camp out that includes old style clothing rental and a couple of meals prepared in the old...
Read moreEvery little girl dreams about her wedding day and mine came true!! The Heritage Center at The Mahaffie was EVERYTHING and more I could've asked for in a venue. From the moment we walked in, the front office was kind and helpful and up to the very day when they helped to ensure a beautiful event space! One of the reason I loved the Heritage Center was not only for the ambiance but location and ease. I loved (and so did my soon to be mother-in-law ...) that we could visit any time to get a feel for the space and run through how we wanted the day to be. I also loved the fact that this venue allows you to have the ceremony AND reception all in one location! We had our ceremony on the south lawn and it was absolutely stunning followed by cocktail hour under the covered patio and reception inside! Lorna sat down with myself, my future in laws and our wedding coordinator to determine how we wanted everything set up for the day of. It was nice knowing the team at the Heritage Center sets up the tables and chairs for indoor reception and outdoor ceremony, all we had to do was bring in our imagination and decorations! They allowed us to bring in any and all decorations from lighting, centerpieces, eucalyptus chandeliers and even a couch/chairs for a sitting area outside! I loved the flexibility of this venue. I would highly recommend them, they helped my dream wedding to become reality and it will be a day we forever remember... Thank you to the amazing team at The...
