No spoken words, just a collection of subtitles and black-and-white scenes. Like a historical version of watching Netflix late at night without waking up the rest of the house. Interestingly, these silent films werenโ€™t always silent. At vaudeville theatres, like Butte Countyโ€™s own @orovillestatetheatre, a Wurlitzer theatrical pipe organ would be used for everything from playing the filmโ€™s musical score to providing โ€œdialogueโ€ for actors and delivering a range of sound effects. Whether it was horses galloping, dogs barking, or the timeless pie connecting with a face, the Wurlitzer was behind it all. The organ was regularly used for live performances and other theatre-based spectacles, of course, but its initial rise to stardom stemmed from being the soundtrack for the birth of cinema. Fortunately for folks in the area, the Oroville State Theatre is proud to have a piece of history. The organ was donated to Oroville in 2011 by the Sierra Chapter of the American Theatre Organ Society. Then in 2017, the installation and restoration of the organ began with the help of the State Theatre Arts Guild (STAGE). This particular organ has a core that originally belonged to Cecil B. De Mille, the famous American film producer. Additional ranks of pipes were added to complete the organ, with STAGE having to cut into the theatreโ€™s backstage wall to make room for the restoration. In all, the restoration was a 3-year process that finished in late 2020. In July 2021, the completely restored Wurlitzer Theatre Organ debuted at the Oroville State Theatre. Renowned organist Walt Strony was at the helm of the 1,100-pipe organ for a pair of concerts, featuring patriotic ensembles as well as the Laurel and Hardy silent film โ€œLiberty.โ€ The debut performance cemented the Oroville State Theatre as being among the fewer than 250 theatres nationwide that features a fully operational theatre organ. So, if youโ€™re a fan of the arts in Butte County interested in a unique theater-going experience, you wonโ€™t have to go far.

We had a decent present a tour of the theatre! An interesting history, and fantastic renovations and replicas of some of the features. Beautiful murals and artwork adorn the walls some have been uncovered and recolored, some redone to match originals. You can watch the pipe organ la play through windows on the two side walls, pretty fun!

This place is a hidden gem. It needs to be on the map for future events. It would be great if the surrounding businesses had before or after show specials to draw a larger crowd. Beautiful restoration. A must see.

Wow !! The Oroville State Theater is a duplicate of the Senator Theater in Chico, minus the diamond tower. It has been refurbished and reminds me of when I was in high school and we would go to Chico to the Senator Theater to watch a movie. Both theaters were built in the late 1930s... At the Oroville State theater I recently watch the movie "Brigadoon ", with Gene Kelly, Cid Charisse, Van Johnson and many more. It was a real treat. Coming up on December 11th at 1:30pm is "White Christmas " , With Bing Cosby and Danny Kay. Ok. Now I'm 62 years of age and raised in really the 70s because the 70s were great for me. But I hold to many traditional values. If you're looking to reminisce, try the Oroville State theater. I think you'll...

It's a beautiful theater and I am so glad it is being preserved and taken care of. But, it's extremely restrictive to those who participate in putting on shows. I get hired to shoot video for performances there and they keep me locked out until they're ready to open the door. I need time to set up and they give me very little. I understand they're commitment to care for the facility, but one guy isn't going to bring...
