The Proprietary House — Attraction in Perth Amboy

My husband and I discovered a piece of New Jersey history that we had never known about. This weekend we watched the documentary entitled "Benjamin Franklin. A Film by Ken Burns." We learned of the "Proprietary House" in Perth Amboy, whose best known resident was New Jersey's last royal governor, William Franklin (son of our Founding Father, Benjamin Franklin). Our docent, Rene, was fantastic. She walked us through the history of the house and its many residents. What a great tour we had. We can't wait to come back and plan for a cup of tea. ...

We visit every year. This time we brought my autistic 7 year old grandson. He was curious and entered with a slightly raised voice. The tour guide stopped and gave a look of disdain. My daughter told him to use his inside voice and the guide repeated this and laughed. The group turned and stared. It's important to be inclusive and welcoming to all. I'm a big time American revolutionary era fan. Benjamin Franklin is one of my all time favorite founding fathers. The propriety house was home to William Franklin, Benjamin Franklin's son. So this historic house has been on my list of places to visit. Kerry, the intern, was my tour guide. He did such a good job of showing me around.
