Only way to describe our dinner last night is horrible. We wanted to dine near the water but my son isn’t a huge fan of Portuguese food so instead of going to the armory, we ended up across the street at the Barge for a 8:45 Saturday night reservation. Having a 2 year old who is hit or miss when it comes to goin to dinner, we do not get out that much. Anyway we were seated as soon as we arrived. Place wasn’t really crowded. Our table was clean but there were covers of butter cups on the floor by our table which should have told me to leave right there n then but we sat. Ordered a pitcher of red sangria and a soda for my son. My 2 year old had his juice we brought for him. Pretty big menu with many choices. Everything sounded pretty good. We started off with the fried calamari. While the marinara sauce was spicy and flavorless, the calamari was pretty tender and well cooked. The sangria was also pretty good. Was thinking we made a good choice for dinner. Then the dinner came. I ordered the filet mignon, my son and wife ordered the “pure crabmeat” stuffed flounder and my youngest had the chicken fingers and fries. As soon as they put the steak in front of me, there was a bad smell. The presentation was poor. Served on a stale piece of white bread with a small chunk of iceberg lettuce on the side. Wasn’t sure if it was the steak or the flounder dishes that gave off the bad smell. Didn’t really smell fishy. Took one bite of the steak and that’s what the smell was. Straight charcoal. My steak tasted like how a grill smells. The bottom of my steak was burnt. Gave some to my wife to make sure it wasn’t just me. It wasn’t. She was like omg send that back. I said I’d take another one if it wasn’t going to take too long. Waiter came back after 5 mins and said it would be about 20 mins. (Kind of long for a medium rare steak) but I said to just forget about it as I did not want to wait that long. My son didn’t really like his flounder as it was very dry so I figured I would just eat his. First bite picked up my fork, I noticed a long black hair on my fork and the end of it I couldn’t even see. It was all the way in the stuffing of the founder. Couldn’t even pull it out. It wasn’t sitting on top of the flounder but baked with it inside of the stuffing. Disgusting. My wife couldn’t eat after that. I showed the waiter and he said he would take that off too. A manager never came over. Our waiter gave us our bill before I even asked for it which was fine. I wasn’t risking ordering anything else from this place. $70 was our bill for a calamari, pitcher of sangria, one stuffed flounder ( was very very dry) and a kids chicken fingers and fries. I really wanted to like this place but as many things that went wrong, and left with a $70 bill and no manager addressed the situation, I will Never return. I still gave the waiter a 20% tip. Even though thinking afterwards that he could have done...
Read moreI'm so glad I decided to take a ride and try the Barge Restaurant and Banquet Faculity. Its located across from the Arthur Kill Waterways in Perth Amboy. There is a patio and indoor seating. I chose indoor seating because they were construction crews working at the time of my visit. The Barge restaurant has been around since 1925.It’s mostly seafood but they do have a nice selection of Soups, salads, burgers, wraps, steak, pasta and chicken. My review is based on lunch only. I chose for my entree the Broiled Scallops. I was surprised I receive 13 scallops for a lunch entree. Came with a house salad, and a choice of a side.I choose a baked potato. My scallops were delicious and perfectly cooked. My salad was crisp and a nice size. My friend ordered their Lobster Salad Wrap. She had a choice of sides and chose their potato salad. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal. The barge offers an extensive list of desserts, So many that they couldn’t list all of them on their menu. I had to scan the rest on to my iphone. for dessert I chose their Chambord Parfait, With vanilla ice cream layered Chambord and fresh whipped cream. This is where willpower comes in and I only had a couple of scoops it was that good. Second dessert I chose was their Crème Brûlée.It too was very good with a very creamy custard interior, and a hard shell on the exterior. It was just waiting to be crack with my spoon. Whipped cream was piped on the side of the dessert. The interior of the Barge is your typical nautical theme, with blue walls and nautical wallpaper as you walk in.There are white linens on all tables. The tables are distanced apart. The staff was very nice and friendly. They did their best to accommodate us at the time. The service was a bit slow, so I’m giving them four stars. I think they needed more waiters. This restaurant has two dining rooms which are spread out.The Barge restaurant is open for lunch and dinner. Next time I come I'd like to sit outside on the patio and take in the views of the waterways. When you’re finished take a stroll on the pier that’s...
Read moreTook my mom here for the first time to treat her to dinner. We went to the front desk to check in for our reservation and two elderly women were having a conversation & completely ignoring us like we weren’t even standing right infront of them. We left and went across the street to The Armory but they had an hour and a half wait, so we begrudgingly went back to The Barge. The elderly women were STILL continuing their conversation, then finally when one walked away, the one who was left sitting at the front desk acknowledged us, and had someone take us to our table. It was so loud in there that my mother and I couldn’t hear each other speak, the restaurant is also small and cramped. We contemplated leaving for a while but then our waitress showed up before we could decide. Our waitress looked like she was 100 years old & on her last leg. Our food took forever to come out, my mom had the shrimp scampi, and I had the surf & turf. I asked for my filet mignon to be medium well yet it still had blood in it, and the few parts that were actually cooked were burnt. The filet mignon was also very difficult to cut through and it was so chewy. My mom said her shrimp scampi was drowned in butter & the rice was soggy. The portions were average, the waitress never came back to our table to ask if we wanted refills on our drinks, we had been done eating for quite some time and our waitress was nowhere in site. Finally, I flagged her down, when she came over to our table she could hardly stand up and she was leaning over the table with her elbows on it, at this point we just ordered our desserts to go. We left with the worst headaches ever because it was so loud in there. The patrons consisted of predominantly elderly people, who knew elderly people could be so loud! I also had a pretty bad stomach ache afterward. I tried my dessert (cheesecake) later on & it was bland & flavorless. I would rather stay home and starve than to go to this hole in the wall ever again, we would’ve been better off just going...
