We love visiting older homes with an interesting history. This was recommended to us by Darius in the visitor center on the Pismo Beach pier. It has limited hours and he recommended the Friday evening time. There is only street parking, but it is right in front of the estate. The modest admission is $5 or $10 for a guided docent tour. We opted for the docent tour because it allowed us access to areas the other tour didn't. It was not crowded and Toni was our guide for just the 2 of us. She told us the history of the estate, which included only 2 different owners, and had a notebook of additional pictures and information. The estate is built on 11 lots that were purchased for $10 total (not each)! The garden was like a Botanical garden with plaques describing the different plants. There were so many varieties of beautiful dinner plate dahlias. The Begonia Garden was amazing with so many varieties of begonias I have never seen. There were two gentlemen playing relaxing music that added to the tranquill atmosphere. The windmill was originally used to heat the pool through a fascinating process. The lighthouse tower was built to block the view of the house next door and also to provide privacy. Most of the outside work is done by dedicated volunteers. We were only able to view part of the house through the windows. The house was left to the city by the last owner and they are in the process of restoring it with needed repairs. They hope to have it completed by next year. We will definitely...

We visited The Chapman House in Shell Beach for our Let’s Go Out Community Date Night, and it was such a wonderful experience. The live music, ocean breeze, and sunset made the evening feel relaxed and effortless. The setting is beautiful from the coastal gardens to the view over the cliffs and it created the perfect backdrop for connection and conversation. The staff was welcoming, and the atmosphere felt warm and inviting for both couples and individuals coming together as a community. If you’re looking for a place to gather, unwind, and enjoy the natural beauty of Shell Beach, The Chapman House is a place we’ll definitely be...

Not worth the time or money. For the entrance fee of $5 we were only able to see a small portion of the grounds, which were noticeably run-down. The begonias were just starting to sprout when we went on April 29. When in bloom in June, they are something of an attraction. A tour of the house would have been $30; we passed. We saved the day by walking up and down the street outside.
