Salon Nyla — Attraction in Portland

If you’re looking for a place that gives great perms, look no further! I love perms, and this is my fifth time getting one. I always make sure to read reviews and look at photos before booking an appointment, so if you’re doing the same, I hope this review helps!

For context, I’ve had a few perms in the past that didn’t turn out great. Sometimes the curls were too loose, some strands stayed straight, or the curls fell out within hours after the perm. These experiences made me anxious about trying a new place.

Then I met Jennifer! She’s the sweetest, kindest hairdresser you’ll ever meet. During our appointment, I felt truly listened to. I told her I wanted a tighter perm because my long hair tends to stretch out after a few weeks. I showed her some pictures, and she exceeded my expectations!

Jennifer was incredibly meticulous, spending a lot of time on each rod to ensure every strand of my hair was curled perfectly. My hair is thick and long, which made the process even more challenging, but she handled it with patience and a smile. She put in 227 rods over the course of five hours, which was no small feat. Not a single strand was left uncurled by the end.

Beyond her technical skills, Jennifer was so thoughtful. She took the time to teach me how to care for my perm and even showed me a new trick for diffusing my hair. At the end of the appointment, she trimmed my dead ends just because she wanted me to look my best.

Honestly, Jennifer was a lifesaver. I have a really important event this month, and I’d been feeling anxious about my appearance. She worked wonders with my hair and gave me the best perm I’ve ever had. I’m so glad I found her! I’ll definitely return to Jennifer for any future perms. Jen is amazing. I wish I had all the photos of what she's done to and for my hair over the years, all gathered up for this review but I'll have to post them later if I can. My profile photo is her work --- perfection. She has been doing my hair from lifting and toning, putting cool colors in, full on haircuts & layering, trims for up-keep, and recently - on a whim: bangs! They look fantastic! Shes gentle, super sweet and always makes sure to ask specifics on what you want, and check-in with you to make sure you get exactly what you want. My hair is always in better condition after I'm done seeing her. She really knows what she's doing. I always suggest bringing in a photo (if you can) to any hair stylist to make sure you're getting what you want, especially if you don't know what the haircut or style is called - just something to do or you may miscommunicate what you're after. I've brought in photos only a few times, but the few times I have, she's only needed a quick look, and immediately know what I'm after, executes it well! I've gotten services from her at several salons, and will continue to follow her if she ever goes anywhere else! I'm glad she's at a salon with Aveda - plant based products now ☺️....

JENNIFER! This lady worked a miracle on a nightmare! I trusted my 10 year old that she was thoroughly brushing her long hair. And found a ball of matted hair at the nape of her neck a week and a half ago. I did everything I could, my daughter knew it would need to be cut, but asked can we comb out everything not in the matted hair and camouflage the adult sized ball of matted hair until school was out. We had an appointment at a different salon for this next Tuesday, 6/18. I went to work on what I could this morning and saw the rest of her hair was starting to get matted, and I started to cry. My husband said we weren't waiting and called Nyla Salon this morning and we got an appointment the same day. Jennifer cut the matted hair out, deep conditioned my daughter, combed the almost-matted hair out, and gave her a cut that she's excited about, while making sure she wouldn't look like a "Karen". She was so patient, and had the most positive attitude and my little girl left the salon confident, going from long, mid back length hair, to hair just under her chin. And it took an hour and a half.
