I'm a blue collar manufacturing worker who would be chomping at the bit to give any established massage therapist who would be able to address my multitude of myofascial problems more or less all of my money that isn't already spoken for by rent, but apparently this establishment is more interested in medically discriminating against people while using misinformation as the basis for that discrimination than they are in actually being accessible. I have had deep infiltrating endometriosis and extensive ablation surgery for it. When the COVID-19 vaccines were emergency use authorized, I consulted my surgeon to seek her opinion as to whether or not I should be vaccinated, since I was seeing many stories about menstrual irregularities after vaccination and even had a friend admitted to the hospital overnight during her first cycle post vaccination due to extreme iron deficiency (when no other factor in her life's terrain had changed). I was informed by my surgeon that deep infiltrating endometriosis can be re-triggered by a multitude of things, and since I'd both already had covid and had experienced a particularly aggressive and extreme case of deep infiltrating endometriosis that had led to the rupture of several organs in my abdominal cavity from the pressure that the endometriosis placed on them that she was of the firm belief that the risk was simply too high to the potential reward I'd gain from the shot. Since this woman saved my life, I have taken and stuck to her advice. I don't know what the formal medical credentials are of the proprietors of this establishment, but considering the COVID-19 vaccines don't prevent illness/experiencing symptoms of covid or transmission of covid by the frank and plain admission of the companies who developed them, requiring them with the justification of community accessibility and safety is farcical if I'm being generous about it. It's dishonest advertising to call yourselves accessible and focused on community while having a strict policy of discrimination and exclusion against people who have made personal and private healthcare choices which effect literally nobody but themselves, especially when that discrimination is being done with no actual concrete and material reason! (I'd understand a policy which banned those with ringworm for the duration of the issue, for example. I'm not saying that the only moral option is to run a laissez-faire petri dish of an establishment.) This is astoundingly, flagrantly ableist and dishonest of this establishment and I think it says a lot about how comforting, healing, and community oriented the mindset of the proprietors really are if you look under the surface of nice platitudes, and bothered to write this up in the spirit of looking out for those who are seeking health and wellness services at the price point that Everett operates at. Even if your budget is tight, you deserve to be treated with respect and care. Find an establishment that won't advertise using duplicitous statements, essentially using you as a mark in...
Read moreGreat escape for anyone looking for some R&R amidst the hustle and bustle. I noticed a killer Groupon, offering an hour massage and an hour hot tub, sauna and steam room for $79. Otherwise its $15 for half an hour $22 for a full hour $30 for 90 minutes and $45 for unlimited use up to an entire day.
There are 2 saunas, one being larger, with 2 bench seat heights surrounding a 90° angle covering 2 walls. While the smaller having a mini door, resembling something a hobbit might use, and only having room for roughly 5 or 6 people tops.
The steam room was roughly 130°F when not blasting a jet of steam, feeling much hotter the 90 seconds it takes to remist the room. Towels can be rented at check in, for a nominal fee. The hot tub had jets on a timer and a bit of a water effect, spraying at least a 1 foot wide stream out of one side, cascading into the water. There was also lawn furniture to lounge in. Or a pair of clawfoot porcelain tubs, offering frigid cold water. Either via a handheld shower head, or just filling the tub from the faucet. This was quite effective and equally enjoyable, to drop ones core temperature rather quickly, for times when overheating and seeking immediate relief.
The whole act of controlling the breath, through the mental anguish related to overheating and overchilling is in itself a meditation. I challenge you to push your limits, and try to spend 10 minutes in a sauna or steam room, then submerge yourself up to your chin for 3 minutes in the cold plunge. Remain overhydrated, and of coarse listen to your intuition. [Maybe 5 and 1.5 minutes will be better for you, or start with even 3 and 1.]
I personally, have a spiritual experience, when I retain breath control, and focus my attention on slowing my heart rate. Thus increasing my proficiency to remain centered, in situations where my automatic reflex responses might try to distract me from that single pointed focus.
The staff are friendly. Most patrons appear to be blissing out, on the simple ability to disconnect from the worries of the world. Magical places, like this gem, do exist. All we have to do, is show up to the occasion and simply. make time...
Read moreThe Everett House Community Healing Center is a vital part of my personal wellness, and I believe an equally important part of the community's wellness as individuals who have access to this place leave with an energy and mindfulness that carries over to other interactions outside of the center. From the massage services that helped me in processing pain from an emergency cesarean from my second daughter's birth in 2015, to the chiropractic care I accessed to recover from an accident during the snowstorm of 2016, to the sauna where I can connect with a practice that is fundamental to me culturally, to the spa tub where I can soak my sore muscles in warmth and calmness not available at home where I am on non-stop as a mom...Everett House has been a place I can count on for healing!
As a plus(ish)-sized native woman, I consider the Everett House to be actively inclusive and body-positive. The facilities are clean and well-managed, and the vibe is homey! I have witnessed personally the peacefulness that this setting and its services afford to people in an otherwise frantic and stressful world. Not only does Everett House offer a wide range of supports to help keep Portland residents healthy, it also serves as a feature that distinguishes Portland to visitors as a place that is progressive and accepting! The professionals who work here are great service providers who work hard to create a sense of balance and safety. As a survivor of trauma, Everett House is very rare in its ability to provide a space that is offering different services in an environment that feels orderly and safe. I need the Everett House in my life, because it helps maintain my inner harmony, and I know I'm not the...
