TLDR- Burger so raw I could hear it mooing, blonde waitress with glasses was ruder than anyone I’d met in Portland so far, entire experience was something we made fun of for the first hour of our trip back. 1/10. Curry fries are a great idea.
My friends and I weren’t from the area, trying to find a bar near this one we accidentally confused this place for what google maps said was another one. We came in at 10, not realizing they closed at 11. But regardless the three of us were seated. The two staff members were noticeably irritated and aside from a generally nice greeting, showed huge distain towards us. I’ll get to the point, the staff was noticeably just, not happy to serve us. They laughed, they stared, and they made rude faces. The atmosphere was awful, the party next to us (the only other 4 people in the place) were yelling so loudly it was not possible to talk. All of that could be forgiven, if it weren’t for the burger. We ordered the easiest things we could for our trip back home, as fast as we could. And when I say, it was a 10 ounce patty of almost completely raw beef. I am not exaggerating. Mine, my fiancés, and my friends brat. We’re cold, raw, and basically inedible. When we ate the fries and veggies on the plate, we sent the rest back and payed out tab. I watched the waitress laugh as she said something to the cook and hand...
Read moreI've been visiting since they opened. Infallible consistency makes this a restaurant first, bar second, if only by a hare (you'll get it if you go...maybe). That said, they've got an impressive tap list of German beers alongside a funky cider. Multiple serving sizes? How convenient! Matching glassware is on point. Be adventurous, get a sample pour or two; you won't see these beers on tap at many other bars!
The food speaks for itself in presentation alone. Glorious. Simple concepts with exceptional flavors, delicate notes balanced atop wholesome, rustic undertones. Stammtich makes a plate of potatoes sophisticated without the pretense. Grab a menu, lay it flat, close your eyes and drop your finger. Do that a few more times and you and yours will have a special meal, regardless which items you choose.
Inside a perfectly lit space, you'll see familiar faces at the bar and behind it, driving the neighborhood atmosphere and relaxed, inviting vibes. The background noise is almost always people having conversations, not obnoxious music or blaring TVs. It's clean and spacious inside, with several streetside shaded booths outside. The extra large sliding windows expose inside diners to the 'hood; allowing welcome sounds and smells to drift towards passersby. Why not stop in for a...
Read moreI wanted to try the wienerschnitzel and we were greeted and told first come first serve, we tried to sit at a table completely clear, no items and menus untouched looking and we were approached by a different waitress trying to say people were sitting there and that they had stepped out for a smoke. I said we were told first come first serve and she rolled her eyes and said if they came back she might honor them lol I said ok, she offered to open a tab and I only wanted one thing so I declined and paid outright for the food, that was brought out very brusquely by another staff member on a paper plate, my drink in a paper cup while everyone around had regular plates and silverware 🤣
I did not tip and will not be back, i could probably make what I had for much cheaper at home but I got what I wanted and it was decent for what it was, overpriced a bit (27$)
Next time I'll go to Vancouver, to Gustav's this place seems to be only for being obnoxious and cosplaying German culture with lots of beer 🤷♀️ if that's what you're looking for have at it. I've heard Europe is full of rude service so maybe it's too...
