I love going there. So much interesting history explained on the large, easy to read plaque. It's obvious that the stone pyramid beside the plaque was built with Love. Well, please see photos (mine aren't very good). The Hi Jolly monument is not in a shaded area, so be careful of the sun. It is wheelchair accessible. I didn't see handicapped parking in the small parking lot, but the parking is within 15-20' from Hi Jolly, anyway. You'll find parking except during what we affectionately call 'The Season'. Then you just take a chance, I'm afraid. It's a wonderful tribute to the man and the camels. Signs on Main Street will point the way. Enjoy our little town...

The final resting place of Philip Tedro, aka Hi Jolly, who was the first and only United States Camel Force Commander (USCFC probably)

Hi Jolly was Syrian of Greek heritage who converted to Islam and took on a religious pilgrimage to Mecca, where he changed his name to Ali. As is customary in Islam one takes on the prefix Hadj, meaning pilgrim, and he now refers to himself as Hadj Ali.

Hadj Ali rides into Quartzite Arizona on a camel in service of the Untied States and tells everyone who asks "my name is Hadj Ali". And ever since he's been known...

If you can stop by and don't mind walking around its great to look at. It's a cemetery some of the people here got baried a long time ago it's really interesting. Some of them are sad some children buried here :/ but that's life right.

Honestly when I was here I couldn't help but wonder what this area would have been like during hi jollys time. Just wondering what life was like for people in the area, what kind of jobs they had, the houses they built, the small shops that would have been here ( it's a small area shop...

📍Hi Jolly’s Tomb Did you know that AZ had camels living here at one time? In 1856, Secretary of War Jefferson Davis decided he wanted to transport freight and people across the desert Southwest on camels. He eventually imported over 70 camels. Along with the first batch came a Syrian caretaker, Hadji Ali. His American masters called him Hi Jolly. The civil war started, Jefferson Davis changed jobs & the project was abandoned. The camels were set free near Quartzite, AZ. Hi Jolly lived until his seventies where he was loved by the locals. So much so that they built him a special pyramid tomb. The camels remained in AZ until around the 1940s. ⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ .⁣ #arizona #arizonaisgorgeous #arizonacollective #arizonalife #arizonaliving #arizonadesert #arizona🌵 #igsouthwest #explore #instagramaz #arizonahighways #explorearizona #westbysouthwest #visitarizona #thingstodoinarizona #roadtrip #roadtripusa #quartzsite #az #aztravel #ontheroad #roadsideattraction #azhistory

I was on a day-long Geocaching adventure in the desert when we stopped by this town for some food. We looked up caches in town while we were eating and ended up finding this awesome cemetery and monument. The scenary was serene, the graveyard was quiet and I learned a lot about the history of the area by visiting this monument. I have to hope that there still might be feral camels wandering the hills out here. Somewhere.
