So, I think background is important. I am a frequent escape room player (approximately 100 rooms played). I also own and run an escape room business approximately 400 miles from this location. I love escape rooms and want the industry to be amazing. I design rooms. I build rooms. I try to help other owners improve their business when asked. Nothing in this review is designed to denigrate this business. I want all escape rooms to succeed because that make the industry better. Instead, I want potential customers, especially those new to escape rooms to understand what they can expect.
The staff of the business was great. They get 4.5 or 5 stars. If you have a clone looking for work, send them my way! You guys did a nice job, a big asset to the business.
Game mastering - 1 of 5 stars. This is not a shot at the staff, but at the untenable situation they were put in. There were 2 game masters for the 9 rooms. They are not actively following along (how could they with so many rooms) so when you ask for a hint, they have to come into the room and then figure out where you are in the game before they can deliver the hint.
The lobby and common areas were ok (3 out of 5 stars). It was bright and clean. Given the shopping mall location, I'm sure this is required. And they did it pretty well. The "airport terminal" feel and theming was a decent touch. It probably helps newer players by giving them something they may already be familiar with. The green screen for after game photos was a nice touch and seemed to work pretty well.
Variety of games? 5 of 5 stars. They had 9 (yes NINE!) rooms that you could play. Themes were all pretty decent (Pirate, Holmes, Secret Agent, etc.). They basically ran a room every 5 minutes, so there was plenty to choose from. They rank the difficulty of rooms in tiers. We did a mid-tier room.
But, I am most interested in the actual rooms. We only played one room, so YMMV if you do one of the other 8 rooms (yes, 8!).
Immersion- Immersion is something that a lot of escape room players crave, myself included. Our room had no immersion (0 of 5 stars). We were supposed to be in an early 20th century room and literally every puzzle was a modern combination lock (one modern keyed padlock). Clues were all laminated paper which further detracted from the immersive value. Walls were just wallpaper that definitely detracted rather than adding to the game.
Puzzle design- Puzzle design was terrible. (1 of 5 stars) There was no flow to the puzzles. No real theme to follow along. It seemed like you just had to search through sheets of laminated paper to find a number that might open a lock with very little rhyme or reason to it. There was also a random assortment of just stuff that was just red herring with no valid reason that it existed. It didn't even really make sense to exist and certainly didn't add to the immersion.
Difficulty- I can't really even rate this. It is either a 5 out of 5 for difficulty or a 1 out of 5 for difficulty. It didn't really require participant to really "solve" anything. It basically required you to happen to stumble onto the right combination of characters on a sheet of paper.
Price - Price was reasonable. We got a discount for joining loyalty program thing (we ALL had to join though). It reduced the price to about $25 per person. That is right around the lower end of the escape room pricing spectrum. It was worth the price for us as we were looking for a way to waste an hour, but I would have been very...
Read moreThis was my 33rd escape room and worst of all time. You're in a cubicle (one small room only) where you can hear other people talking in their escape rooms. It's a money maker place and disgrace to escape rooms. the puzzles are more so time-consuming than intellectual. we easily got a key to open a box that was nearly impossible to unlock. We spent about seven minutes trying to open it and when we called our game master for the first clue to ask if it's stuck, she said it's difficult to open but twist until it catches (which it doesn't) and pull. And out the door she went. well great, thanks for the help. We spent even more time on the faulty box and she meant twist the key and pull the top of the box. Gah The second time when we called for a clue she gave us the answer to a puzzle we hadn't received all the clues for yet.... instead of giving us a clue to the current one we were on. To which made absolutely no sense to us until later when we found the clue that would have led us there. The third clue we asked her for was also completely misleading and wasted tons of time for us where as if she were just a little more specific we would have gotten it instantly. finally at the end when we ran out of time and she walked in the room we were currently opening the final box to escape and she goes yey you did it! And then tried to rush us out of there where we weren't even able to see how it ended. Extremely disappointed I will never go back don't waste your time...
Read moreMy husband and I did the Hollywood Premiere room and were highly disappointed. We owned an escape room business and have done many rooms, and this was by far the worst experience. The game master's were super nice but the room is not well designed and we were easily able to open several locks we hadn't gotten clues for yet, which made the rest of the game confusing, and the employee clues were not helpful as they had no idea what part we were on when they came in and then had to figure out what clues we had used--which was difficult because they were out of order. Getting any clues from the game master takes a lot of time because of this and because you have to wait for them to actually come into the room instead of using a walkie system or the like. The clues in the room were apparently "worded weird" according to the employee when we asked how we were supposed to have gotten the last box open, and because other clues had been found out of order-- which we didn't know then, we would've never gotten that one open as it has to do with previously given clues, but it turned out we were also supposed to use things we had NOT been given clues to whatsoever. The room was pretty boring, using just boxes and laminated papers--no tech or even many things to open. There were only 5 or 6 boxes with one box having 3 locks on it, which is lazy design, in my opinion. I never want to give a bad review, but don't waste your $30...
