they do not care about their current students. when you come in, they pull out all the stops and attempt to wow you. your credits will transfer here, but they rarely transfer to other universities making it really hard to transfer after freshman year. winthrop loves to say that they love their students, but that love seems to be for the paycheck students can supply to the lawn care bill and a new fountain for tillman. if you want consistency, you know winthrop will have people mowing the lawn at least twice a week in the spring. they cut the NEW grass, because the university allows for its grass, flowers, and bushes to die from neglect every year just to pay exorbant amounts to replace it all with new plants confidently in time for the spring tours to start. this is simply the beginning of the multiple ways winthrop lies to incoming families. the food you ate at the welcome weekend? they specifically paid for better quality food for that event. you want to know what the current students ate for dinner that day? the left overs from breakfast and lunch. what's worse: that meal of leftover food was 5× better than what they serve on a regular weekly schedule. they spend "extra" on food at the cafeteria specifically to fool incoming students and parents. the food they usually pay for is the second tier at. that would be one tier above prison food. i have personally had food poisoning from both thompson (main cafeteria) and from digs (student center). the quality of ingredients is abysmal most of the time, leaving students to eat large quantities of sodium high, processed foods - which have been shown in study after study to mess with all sorts of functions in the body and negatively impact your health. the dormitories are falling apart. Lee wicker, Phelps, thompson, Roddey, and Margaret Nance have mold. Phelps has multiple condemned rooms from water damage that have grown molds that eerily resemble footage from the last of us. for more than two months fall semester of 2023 and one month spring semester 2024 the elevator in lee wicker has been down. not only is this an inconvenience to all students, this was an every day hell for students with mobility disabilities who were unable to change rooms mid semester. winthrop has two dorms that have been fully condemned that they have yet to begin tearing down. all they have seemingly been able to accomplish in the two years they have ADMITTED that the dorms are health hazards, is empty out the "good" furniture to reuse in other dorms and block off resident parking spaces. the dorms are not the only buildings in need of repair, Dinkins, the ASC tutoring center and the building with many support programs for students, has not had a working elevator in close to two years. housing is also an issue on campus. despite being down two dorms and slowly having to condemn more and more rooms, winthrop accepted an even larger freshman population this past year. the university continues to require students to live on campus their first two years. winthrop university is a subpar university that does not care for its student population. the examples listed here are a few points off of many many less than desirable moments from Winthrop University. if you are in between colleges for your first semester of college, I hope that this helps give a clearer picture of this college before you decide. -sincerely, a...
Read moreI’m a second semester sophomore, also a transfer student and as much as I love Winthrop there’s a few things that are just ridiculous. This school is very money hungry we sit here and register for classes but our bills come late. On top of that the due dates for the money is ridiculous I’m sorry but I need more than a week to pay the ridiculous balance. Also my classes get dropped then it’s impossible to get back into them. I’ve never been to a school that just drops classes because of money. Not to mention the dorms are overly priced. The food courts and stuff don’t stay open long enough. Winthrop also makes you take ridiculous classes such as human experience and CRTW to graduate. Don’t even get me started on financial aid they are no help and extremely lazy. The fact that they lose documents and processing them takes forever is ridiculous. They also never tell you when you can apply again. Honestly if I’m going to be there another two years Winthrop needs to do better or I can take my...
Read moreBe wary of the financing office. They will not work with you, even when it is their fault. I attended Winthrop for 2 years while I was out of the Navy while using the GI Bill. During that time the GI Bill changed and no longer covered out of state tuition. I was not notified of this till I received my $6200 bill. After speaking to the finance office numerous times about the course of contact used, they stated that they had not updated my address even though they did have it on file they stated that all attempts had been sent to a prior address. This resulted in being sent to collections and a massive hit to my credit report. I went ahead and paid off the amount after numerous requests to try to work this out had failed. They refused to remove it from my credit. I am writing this to let others know that they do not care about the financial status of their alumni. Reflect on this while you are considering schools. Is this the type of college you want to be...
