Highly authentic Japanese market. There is a large selection of freezer items, and pretty fresh refrigerator items as well like sushi, onigiri, and mochi. Maruichi has quite a bit of stuff that you wonât be able to find at the more generic Teso or Ebisu (both are great but tbh 50% of both storeâs stock are items you can find at Great Wall lol). I enjoyed my time at Maruichi a lot more than those other two despite it being much smaller. Mariuchi has a better food section, although if youâre looking for a large selection of cosmetics youâre better off with the other two.
They have a really nice display of bowls and dishes that definitely feel underpriced. We got a super cute one with a drooling cat for our own drooling cat. Thereâs a super cute Shiba Inu with mt Fuji ramen bowl thatâs begging for someone to buy it. They even have matcha whisks!
I also like the feeling that this is a small locally owned shop with actual Japanese owners. Ebisu isnât bad, but Teso specifically doesnât really feel Japanese even if they are perhaps Japanese owned (Teso only plays Korean music???). Maruichi is the authentic experience you are looking for, even the staff behave like how Iâve experienced in Japan.
We will be back, and I canât believe we havenât been here sooner! Iâm even seeing that they may serve bento lunches? May stop by during...
Read moreMy husband and I can't say enough good things about this shop. It is family owned and has a lovely selection of items, from groceries to beautiful bowls, to kitchen small appliances like rice cooker. The staff have also helped us to select ingredients and made suggestions for cooking Japanese dishes. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask staff, either at the store or by calling on the phone.
Once COVID-19 hit, my husband and I were sad to think we may not be able to visit one of our favorite shops. I am immune compromised, so we rely on curbside pickups and delivery for our groceries. Amazingly, in record time Maruchi built a website that could allow for pickup and home delivery. Each order has been so lovely and very fast-- usually the same day I order or the next day. Particularly in these trying times, it's great for my husband and I to enjoy creating Japanese dishes together. For fun, I added some photos of foods we made with Maruchi's ingredients, with beautiful bowl and plate purchased from their gift shop. Thank...
Read moreThis is in the same shopping center as Temari, just up at the top of it. They have all kinds of Japanese food here and all of it is good. The main thing we were picking up from here was Umeshu, especially since we couldn't find it anywhere else. For those curious, Umeshu is an alcoholic beverage that contains ume at the bottom of the bottle that can also be eaten. Just sit on a bottle and let it age to make those fruits stronger in taste. Warning though: the fruits still have their pits so be careful. They can also get you torn up faster than you might realize! Luckily, there is now a liquor store in Delaware that carries it so you don't have to travel all the way to pick up a few bottles. Theres plenty of food and snacks here to keep you busy too. Really nice little place! If you go to Rockville, make sure...
