My experience at Codework Escape started off after a few messages that were exchanged with Heather (one of the owners along with Mike) letting her know that I was an escape room enthusiast and that I had an interest in coming to their business. As I’ve come to find with many of the escape room businesses that I’ve been to, a great experience starts off with the owners. I feel like a broken record when I say this because I’ve said it so many times in my reviews but Heather and Mike were extremely nice as well as accommodating for our group. I truly enjoy being able to chat about the business and our mutual love for escape games when I visit a business. Heather and Mike were awesome!
On this visit to Codeword Escape, I played their room “Curse of the Golden Touch” along with 4 other experienced escape room enthusiasts/owners. Curse of the Golden Touch was my 44th escape game.
We arrived for our game, chatted a bit and then got down to business. Curse of the Golden Touch was a really really fun experience to play. I tip my hat off to Heather and Mike because we like to play a certain way (we like to play with no hints unless we really get stuck and ask for one) and they allowed us to do so. (Disclaimer: Hints ARE available if you want them during your experience) I’ve had gamemasters in the past attempt to intervene when we’ve gotten really stuck and it’s distracting from the experience. Playing with Heather and Mike as our gamemasters felt like we were playing with very experienced gamemasters and they allowed us to continue to pry the couple of times we hit a bump in the road. It definitely adds to the quality of the experience when you are allowed to play the way that you like.
For the room itself, the attention to detail in the manner that the props were built was superior. One thing that stuck out to me was that there were numerous objects that were finished with a very tough gold finish to replicate and there was not a flaw in the finish work. To me it’s just something you would expect from a theme that has to do with “royalty.” The décor of the room overall fit the theme very well.
My biggest compliment to Heather and Mike was how the room played. It was a challenging room for 5 experienced people but it wasn’t impossible. That element alone made it very very fun to play. Every puzzle was solvable (meaning there wasn’t anything unreasonable that you were asking yourself, what just happened and how did I solve that) and after you figured out the answer to it, you understood the puzzle. There were also a few original puzzles that I have not come across any in other rooms that I have played. There were always multiple things going on at once, which kept everyone busy but not out of the loop of what each other was doing. The puzzles also worked as they should. When you completed a puzzle or an action, you knew it. Huge kudos on that aspect to Heather and Mike for the first room that they built. We finished this room with one ever so slight hint and it was just over the time limit. We finished in about 60 minutes and 10 seconds.
All said and done, you need to get down to Codeword Escape and play Curse of the Golden Touch. I highly recommend their business and I cannot wait to return myself and play their upcoming rooms that are currently under...
Read moreA lot of fun!! I had previously done rooms in Middletown, CT and Boston, MA, and this was my favorite one by far (all were the same price within ~$2). First off, the space was bright and well-kept— a pleasant surprise after doing other rooms that were dimly lit or dark. The decor was engaging, with enough extraneous props and information to throw you off, but not overwhelm you. The “Curse of the Golden Touch” storyline was very well executed and appealing. It made you feel like you were working towards a goal, not just solving one puzzle to get to the next, and there were many different styles of puzzles that kept you thinking. We booked last-minute on a whim for something to occupy a Friday night (their online booking is a breeze!), but there were only three of us and we struggled to get through the whole thing. The owners were very helpful and encouraging and gave us a few extra clues to help us get to the end. My one regret is not planning ahead and having a larger group; in my opinion, 5-6 probably would have been ideal, but you can book up to 10. I really want to go back and do it again, but I know that wouldn’t be fair to the newbies. I will definitely visit again when their new room opens. If you’re in the area, this is a great way to spend an hour with friends or family. And if you’re not in the area, it’s worth a drive. If you’ve never tried an “escape room” experience, I would 100% recommend this as an awesome, engaging, unintimidating introduction for anyone, though the puzzles might be too advanced for kids under age 14ish....
Read moreMe and my wife have done 4 other local escape rooms and one on the other side of the country. I have learned a few ways you can categorize these escape rooms. There is production value, curb appeal, puzzle strength, clue system, staff interactions, and prop function. In all but one category this place gets top ranks. The production value, while very good, has a high standard to live up to in the movie set like room in Provo, UT. This place definately takes a strong second, so dont think this is far off. The building is easy to locate and know where you are going. Some new escape rooms lack the accessibility where it seems like you are going to actually have to escape some dungeons when you get there. A wonderful entrance and waiting area with a few locks and puzzles to solve await you. Puzzle strength is on par with most other rooms we have sampled in the area. Giving you a good mix of the types you commonly see in most rooms. The clue system was good. The game wardens did keep an eye on where you were and if something was going away from the correct path at the last second a chime and screen informed you of such. The staff was a lovely family looking bunch that seemed to also be escape room enthusiasts. They wanted to get feedback about the room and were just overall pleasant to talk to. Finally prop function was great. All the locks, doors and magnetics functioned flawlessly. As was stated by one of our first timer friends, we cannot wait till they open up another room so we can attempt...
