This is a generally bad area to bring your kids. I've lived near this park for 12 years and I can say that it has slowly but surely deteriorated. Their are always drunkards loitering the park benches, harassing random people for no reason other than being drunk, inconsiderate jerks. The playground is usually occupied by teenagers smoking weed. A lot of homeless people also loiter about(not that there is anything wrong with them being homeless, it's just their behavior towards the park); harassing random persons. The issue with them is that they hog the public bathrooms, usually stinking them up, clogging the toilets, vandalizing the bathroom walls and overall just leaving them looking damaged beyond repair. It got so bad that their is bathroom security now to prevent fights or drug use or whatever the hell these people do in there. I personally do not feel safe playing basketball in the courts anymore. I've almost been assaulted multiple times by the same crazy junkie looking to "play" with someone. This person is out of control. She lashes out at people physically with little to no provocation. She throws random tantrums out of complete nowhere, and to top it all off, she uses racial slurs like it is just regular, every day talk. I do not recommend this park at all. There need to be changes like park security and maintenance in the bathrooms, those places are filthy! The most glaring problem that this park is not addressing is the after school programs! No one wants their children playing around in a place like this, It brings a huge lingering sense of danger. I have found dirty needles, condoms, sharp objects like scissors and even human fecal matter just laying down in the basketball courts. These things are hazardous to anyone's health, let alone YOUR children. Keep your kids away...
Read moreMost people it seems lately are unaware there is more park * On the other side of Portrero Boulevard - there is a quaint little amphitheater/stage half ringed with a grassy area for views. Adjacent to the stage is the only skateboarding bowls, I have seen so far, which seems like a secret, or simply overlooked by the current generation of skateboarders.
Probably because it is such a pain to get here if you don't drive - as none of the Muni buses service the area. Which is a pity because the bowls are tagged with graffiti (normal) not cracked and smooth riding, like they built it right the first time for generation's to enjoy getting abrasions and minor bloody injuries - the badges of honour in skateboarding circles.
The skate park @ Van Ness and 13th sucks compared to this park. If more townies knew of this place there would be more contented exhausted skateboarders, with bloody bruises of their own making. Which is ideal for beginners to come and practice, since there are hardly any hard core riders hogging it. The day I visited, there was only a single gray haired old timer skateboarding and a twenty something riding his bike in the bowls. Nearby is a grassy expanse that seems best suited for doges to run amok in bliss. There are no other park equipment like a ball stop for baseball, or soccer net on this side of the park across C. Chavez.
However, there is a homeless presence in the interchange area ~ next to the park. The dept of recreation and parks have the access gates locked to keep out the drug addicts and bicycle hijackers from having easy access to the park, riffraff are welcome to use the park like normal sheeple, they just have to use the access points...
Read moreI've never used this park or playground, but I always see people playing baseball, soccer, or tennis -- there's virtually always someone on the benches chit chatting or listening to music in the morning or afternoon.
This little patch of street between the on way ramp back to 101 and intersecting with Cesar Chavez street is where I like to park my car. I'm asking nicely -- please don't break my quarter windows -- or any of my windows. I don't carry anything valuable in my car, and virtually everything I touch loses value so, keep that in mind, please and thank you.
I've also noticed that it's quite "watched." Almost every time I have walked by or parked, there is a police officer or...
