I love how small this theater is with the exception of the extremely unfortunate seats. They are very small, have vol metal sides and are awkward to get in and out of. Definitely needs an upgrade.
The other thing the needs an upgrade is the 2 stall multi-urinal restroom. I fon't mind a neutral gender restroom but it needs a tin of work. Everything from the lighting to the stall door locks needs help.
The concession stand is just right and plenty of room in the concession area to enjoy your purchases. Selection is average but no need t change. Friendly (volunteer?) staff.
I'm nor a fan of rhe old fashioned type of water fountains. They have one at the restroom entrance. If it were me I'd remove it, it doesn't seem like an item that is best for public health. When I was recently at the playhouse, I witnessed an older gentleman who did not wash his hands in the restroom after exiting the urinal area and the go to saud water fountain, press the button for water and proceeded to cough and sneeze onto/into the water spicket. Gross.
This playhouse frequently has some of the most interesting...

I had an unforgettable experience at The Playhouse Theatre in San Francisco! From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the intimate yet vibrant atmosphere, comfortable seating, and fantastic acoustics that made every moment of the performance feel immersive. The staff was warm and welcoming, adding to the overall charm of this wonderful venue.
As for Exotic Deadly: Or the MSG Play, it was an absolute triumph! Keiko Green’s script is bold, hilarious, and deeply thought-provoking, blending humor with a sharp social critique on Asian American identity, cultural myths, and food taboos. The cast delivered outstanding performances, bringing both the comedy and the emotional depth of the story to life. The play’s inventive storytelling, dynamic staging, and sharp wit kept me engaged from start to finish.
If you’re looking for a theatre that showcases innovative and powerful productions, The Playhouse Theatre is a must-visit. And if you have the chance to see Exotic Deadly: Or the MSG Play, don’t hesitate—it’s a rare gem that’s as entertaining as it is...
Read moreGot $31 TodayTix to the 2pm matinee of Evita today - only saw the movie and was curious about the play - though in a small venue in the upper floors of a hotel right off Union Square - it was an easy walk from BART Powell station and worth the effort - talented small cast - with a pretty minimalistic set. The seats we got all the way in the back of the upstairs balcony were pretty cramped - but it was not overly crowded so we. Able to spread out a little. Also took advantage of the chance to walk around the area which was surprisingly cleaner and had more foot traffic than I expected form how desolate the retails spaces are - especially down Powell - the city needs to really step it up and put a night market or street fair booths from other city vendors or something to liven up these streets or I fear there will be an even longer time to recovery - seems the Prima Dona landlords here must not want to face reality and lower rents to get businesses in there ASAP. But I digress - theater is convenient and worth supporting - at least the the...
