Gorgeous place to catch a sunset, access to Sutro Baths and beach, really scenic walking trails with views if the Golden Gate.
The monument itself is subdued but sobering. The shrapnel riddled bridge wing of the USS San Francisco sits atop the bluffs, looking west out to sea. Built in the Bay's own Mare Island, she was among the US Navy's cruiser fleet that first took the fight to the Japanese in the early, uncertain days of WWII. There, in the company of her sister ships, she took on the Japanese navy at the naval battle of Guadalcanal, going toe to toe with the battleship Kirishima, among other foes, in the pitch black of night of the South Pacific. In the battle that ensued, the San Francisco would take 45 hits from Japanese naval gunfire, killing 77 of the crew, including Captain Cassin Young, and admiral Daniel Callaghan.

The memorial park is located at lands end just to the left of the parking lot where you can see a section of the ship that looks like Swiss cheese. As you walk just about 100 feet south of the memorial you can see The Golden gate perfectly and if you dare, you can envision the dilapidated USS San Francisco sailing back under it, on its way back home.
