My family stopped at the temple today. We were greeted by a sign on the door that stated the temple essentially requires traditional or conservative dress to enter. The sign specifically said that shorts were prohibited. My husband and son were both wearing tailored, knee length, dark colored shorts. They were not cargo or denim. Keep in mind, it's the peak of summer and about 90 degrees outside. I was wearing a long tunic top with sleeves to my elbows and full length pants. Based on the signage, we felt unwelcomed and did not enter. My son is at an age where we are trying to encourage him to deepen his understanding of Hinduism. My son is 13 years old and he was wearing a tailored pair of shorts. I was wearing tailored pair of shirts too. It's summer and almost 90 degrees outside. My wife who is American (White) who has been welcome there before didn't feel comfortable entering because she was wearing full length pants and a long length tunic top.
Since when are temples putting in a dress code? I would have understood if it had said something like "this is a place of worship and please dress accordingly". I guess draconian conservatives want it to be this way. Well next time just say non Indians...
