The Citizen Potawatomi Nation Cultural Heritage Center is an absolute must-visit when in Shawnee, OK.
The heritage center gives you a real-life feel of what it was like for the Potawatomi tribe's people in a timeline reference order explaining its vast cultural history.
The museum has been updated within the past couple of years and it has been exciting to see the growth and improvement the heritage center offers.
My favorite exhibit within the museum is the wigwam. I remember viewing it as a child 20 years ago. It is nice that it's still available to display for many others to view.
I do wish they would add guided tours to the facility during the CPN festival. However, I also understand the amount of foot traffic the festival brings. Yet, it would still be a great addition and an awesome educational resource for all ages.
Overall, the Citizen Potawatomi Cultural Heritage Center is well-maintained, clean, accessible, and the staff is friendly. My family and I visit every year during the CPN festival and we always look forward...

The whole place smells of sweetgrass, too, which is so wonderful and relaxing. Lots of great information from a more personal perspective than I'd ever heard before. I can't wait to go, again.
Oh, and the gift Shop is a great, too. They have a wide range of goods, from jewelry to lotions to...
Read moreI visited a lot of the museums in Eastern Oklahoma and this one was a personal favorite. There is an aviary where injured eagles are cared for and rehabilitated, that can be visited only by appointment, so be sure to call ahead for that. I loved the art work. The exhibits are well curated and it gives a comprehensive overview of the tribes, from the origin stories and legends, to pre Columbian life, to the centuries of European driven change, to removal and dissemination upto the current state of affairs and efforts for revival. Very well organized. I gained a wealth of information and understanding here. And it is free!! More people need to visit this gem!! 10/10. Please...
