You are in the Hall of Fame! (At least to me you are.) This place has one me won over ten fold. On a continuation of a shark expedition, I was alerted to the findings of a Megalodon tooth found in Calvert Cliffs, MD, just outside the Washington, D.C. metro area, and had to stop by on the 4th of July. I was impressed by the quality and detail of this museum. How did I not know about this place growing up? I would have loved a school field trip here. The museum is a perfect place for families, couples, and explorers who love all things aquatic and for marine enthusiasts young and old. I particularly loved the Fossil exhibit, the mini Aquarium, the Lighthouse, and of course the Megatooth life size skeleton replica. Aside of the Megatooth at the South Africa Museum, this is the only one in the world! Fascinating how I sensed there was more to my shark story than just the great white. (I had never heard of the giant Megalodon until days before my arrival.) This museum has a lot to offer, a great staff, storytellings and reenactments throughout the day, on-site paleontologists, fossil and garden clubs, charter boat like cruises, and fun filled events. I was shocked at how full this museum was with great finds. I personally was intrigued by the rare Saber-Tooth Cat Skull, Woolly Mammoth artifacts, Duck-billed Dinosaur skull, Oviraptor Dinosaur Skeleton, Camarasaurus Dinosaur, and a Mastadon Elephant Skull. Although these remains (and others) span millions/billions of years, I paid my respects and gratitude for a life well lived. (You are my ancestors and you served a great purpose not only then but Here and Now.) After my journey back in time, I said hello to my beloved Jelly fish in homage to the nickname we share and loved the Otters playland for Chessie Grace and Calvert. They are living there best lives with all those toys, comfy beds, and indoor/outdoor accommodations, a very inviting place. I would have loved to get in there and play with them. It reminded me of my house with Roco and Onyx's stuff (that I'm slowly redecorating to fit the Sexy and I Know It theme.) Eventhough I will miss SharkFest on the 13th of July, and missed Boys 2 Men on the 28th of June, I'm glad found this place, led by the direction of Love to go the Jurassic way. I look forward to my return to become a member while visiting Maryland and look forward to my paranormal research with the Lighthouse (I didn't forget your messages gas lamps.) Special thank you to my beloved Cthulhu, I knew I was meant to be here when I glimpsed the The Call of Cthulhu book on the table while headed to the gift store. Cthulhu might be fictional to most, but is really real to me. Loved it...to be...
Read moreI am a 20 plus year resident of Calvert County and have visited the Calvert Marine museum many times. This museum, compared to others, is unique in the experience that can be had for all ages. The location is beautiful, on the water, almost idyllic in historical setting and calming with a breeze and well maintained landscaping. Traveling to the museum presents the often felt and surprising reveal Maryland points of interest are known for and that is how you transition quickly from busy highway to experiencing a natural immersion and the sudden escape of the grind. I recommend picnicking as there is no food service, but there are picnic tables and boats for kids to climb on and be pirates. There also fast food and nice restaurants for takeout nearby. The flora on the grounds have descriptive markers and level paths invite strolling. Admission is reasonable, I recommend membership for frequent visits. The restrooms are clean and accessible without having to pay first. The exhibits present the Historical maritime commerce, the natural features of the county, the fossil collections, the life of aquatics in the Chesapeake Bay and the resident otters. Learning about boatbuilding, the fishing industry and the relationship to natural resources is easily achieved. You can book a ride on the Tennyson for a short cruise from the cove into the Patuxent. They now have paddle boats and canoes you can putz around, with a little âpâ. A highlight is the lighthouse which has a great story and original artifacts. The museum is one of those gems,...
Read moreEdited review: I reached out to Jeffrey and he encouraged me to try out the museum again. We had a wonderful experience this past weekend aboard the Tennison and the guide was really great with our young boys. Everyone we encountered at the museum this past Friday was welcoming and we had a great time. I am glad we gave it another chance, and really appreciate that they took my feedback to heart with regard to improving customer service training for museum volunteer staff. Thank you all for a great second visit.
Previous review: My six year old was accosted by a man working at the sting ray tank for sticking his hand too far in the water. He yelled at him and said, âDonât you know how to read that sign? You donât belong here.â (No, he doesnât know how to read yet. And I, his mother, had not seen the sign since the children were all in front of me and I was trying to keep an eye on them and we had quite literally just arrived to the tank area). I completely respect that there are rules for both human and animal safety, but that reaction of his was appalling. Needless to say, we didnât feel welcome here. Itâs a nice museum, but Iâll probably never bring my kids here again. Iâve never had someone speak to my child like that...
