Frank Lloyd Wright's Westcott House — Attraction in Springfield

We had a friend come into town for the week and used that opportunity to go see this wonderful house. It starts off with a little movie, and a tour director takes you around the home. The director was very knowledgeable about all aspects of the history and restoration of the house. The architecture of this home is neat to see and experience the genius of the design. He used sunlight to his advantage to bring light into rooms in a spiceal way. The wood working on the built-in cabinets is amazing, and the layout is very clever. Taking into consideration the age, there is no accommodation for wheelchairs. I highly recommend this tour for anyone interested in homes of this style. Westcott House is not a completely restored home as some historic houses have been. This reduces the value of the touring experience. The lack comes because FLW designed furniture was lost over the many years the building was split into several individual apartments before the conservancy came in and bought the building. A Springfield foundation bought the building from the Wright Conservancy and helped pay for the restoration. After several millions of dollars worth of work the building is beautiful but mostly unfurnished. There aren't many original photos of the house much less the furniture. When I was working construction the contractor i was pleasured to learn from my mentor and I wanted to be a part of the only other Frank Lloyd wright house in town before I was going to move to lumber sales. I wasn't just taught by the best i was tested by the best of all time to design organic architecture and my mentor was making me into a artistic master carpenter and it would take everything everyone has to build a house with FLWs style.
