Wine isn’t my adult beverage of choice. I will almost always go for a glass of beer or a cocktail instead of wine, but I do like the occasional glass of wine and I like it even more when paired with the right food. A place where you can satisfy both needs is Messina Hof Harvest Green Winery and Kitchen.
Walking into this restaurant and winery, you will notice that it has a certain elegance about it, but it doesn’t go overboard. It’s the type of place you would feel good visiting with a date or with your family. There are private rooms for special occasions and an outdoor dining space as well. There is also a bar where you can go if you plan to just try a glass or two of wine and nothing more.
If you’re even the slightest bit hungry, however, I recommend sticking around for food. The dinner menu consists of sections for shareables, greens, main dishes, pizza, and desserts, plus there is a kid’s menu. The choices in each section are limited, but this is good, because it helps make it easier to choose. I tend to go for the pizzas and I really like that they have several vegetarian options, which makes it great for families like mine that have a vegetarian in their ranks.
The pizzas at Messina Hof Harvest Green Winery and Kitchen are wood fired and taste delicious! If I’m in a non- meat mood, I go for the Truffle and Fig pizza. If meat is what I’m craving, the Douglas is a good choice. And there is a wide assortment of wines to wash it down. The wine list has about 40 to 50 choices. They don’t serve any other adult beverage option, so find a wine you like and enjoy.
On my last visit here, I was with a large group and we did have an unusual occurrence at the end. Once we were ready to pay, we were told that they could not separate our checks individually. Well, almost no one had cash and we told them there was no way this would work. To their credit, they did finally find a way to break down the checks individually. This is something to keep in mind if you visit as part of a large gathering of people.
I don’t love wine the way I love beer and cocktails. But the occasional glass of wine is fine and when paired with the right food, it’s an experience worth seeking out. Messina Hof Harvest Green Winery and Kitchen offers tasty wine and equally tasty food in a nice atmosphere. It’s a little pricey, but not extremely so and it has enough going for it to warrant a...
Read moreMy wife and I have been to the Messina Hof vineyard many times and always enjoyed it. We were all excited to see the winery and kitchen in the Katy area and I decided to make reservations for our anniversary.
The restaurant and wine tasting bar are all next to each other in one large open hall, which doesn’t make for a very relaxing atmosphere. We sat down at our table and the waiter brought a bottle of tap water. No greeting. No “How are you?”. He didn’t seem to be happy and for sure he wasn’t very agile. The water had a strong chlorine taste so we asked for some bottled water, sparkling or still. Neither was available!!
My wife asked for some tea instead and asked for the types of tea that were available. Our waiter had no idea but said he would “take a look”. He came back with a few packets and we asked some simple question: caffeinated or decaf, black vs. green - none of them could be answered by him. He said that “he doesn’t drink tea and never read what’s on the packages”. We also had to ask for a small plate to put the tea bag on. I guess you are supposed to just slab it on the table when you are done?
After that we decided to order our food: my wife went with the root vegetable gnocchi and I ordered the brown butter chardonnay fish. Our food arrived at different times, which was a bit weird for proper restaurant. The fish turned out to be salmon and when it arrived, it was very rare. Our waiter didn’t bother to ask how I would like my fish, so I sent it back to the kitchen, asking for it to be done medium. Before it came back, my wife was almost done eating her food. The gnocchi were okay but she said that some of them seemed undercooked.
When my salmon finally did come back, the glazed carrots (very hard and practically rare as well) and the rice were already cold. Not sure why the kitchen couldn’t keep the rest of the plate warm while cooking the fish.
At that point, we decided to just take a few more bites and then leave. We shared our disappointment with the waiter who took off half of the cost for the salmon.
Overall a pretty disappointing experience and for sure not worth the Messina Hof name. Bad service, bad food, and not a great atmosphere. We...
Read moreMy husband and I were excited to finally make it here for dinner. We made a reservation and our table was ready when we arrived. We were seated at a table in the sun. There were multiple open two tops and we asked to move to one in the shade. We were told no. All tables are assigned when reservation is made apparently. During our two hours there, no one was sat at two of the tables in the shade entire time we were dining. I loved the idea of wine bottle bottoms for water glasses. Unfortunately the inside of my glass has several sharp areas. We ordered ghost cheese appetizer, Tuscan pizza & The cactus & pig along with Angel Riesling & Aggie network late harvest muscat cannelli. Wines were served & my riesling was not good. Tasted like syrup. This is my go to wine with Messina wines. Waitress left with wine and returned with a good glass of riesling. The goat cheese arrived and was burnt. We had to ask for silverware and napkins twice. They arrived just before entrees were served. The chef sent apologizes and the replacement goat cheese was delicious! Both entrees were quite tasty with the exception of the potato cake. It was blend, but you do get a huge portion of juicy pork. Peaches & arugula was a nice compliment to pork. The pizza was extremely flavorful. I would ordered aging. I asked the waitress about information on a local wine, Emblaze. Her response was, "it is a sweet red wine. It's served cold." Not really a helpful response. What are flavor notes, do people usually like it? That would have been helpful information. She was able to speak on the popular wines with knowledge. Or experience started out horribly, but the helpfulness of the staff and food turned the evening around. The sunset was a beautiful backdrop. We...
