Read moreMy review is biased because I've been coming here since I was a small child. This park is a jewel in the local area. It is free to enter for local Sylvania and Sylvania township residents. In the time that I've been coming here the park has matured and developed and integrated with the local recreational community sponsoring fishing derbies for the kids in the spring, jogging marathons and has a meeting room that is used for various community endeavors including private rental. I know they rent paddle boats and row boats and maybe kayaks, no motorized boats are allowed. I have seen small sailboats on the lake. There is a strict no alcohol policy and I've seen the police or sheriff's department approach random partiers and check their cup to make sure that it's non-alcoholic. It is a public fishing hole which means adults have to have a fishing license but kids don't so it's a great place to teach your kids or grandkids how to fish. One end has a sandy beach and an enclosed shallow area to act as a kiddie pool, but the beach drops off pretty quick to the deep end and there's a rope to separate the deep end where the rafts are and kids have to pass a lifeguard test to swim out there. There's a very nicely paved path that goes all the way around that I think is about 2 mi long and totally wheelchair accessible, about half of the path is in the shade and about half of it is in full sunlight. The park also has four different playground areas one of them is near the volleyball courts. The others are in shady corners of the park. I forgot to add the swimming area has toilet facilities and a changing room of sorts, I see park employees go in there with cleaning supplies a lot considering how randomly I come here. They also have open air shelter houses, freestanding barbecue pits and benches looking out onto the lake. It's hard to count how many times I've been here for a picnic, barbecue, graduation party or family reunion. I'll probably be here...
Read moreI honestly do not like olander. It's great for walking and exercise but it's just not that great. I feel like its way sandy there and the fishing isn't great. Now if you have three year olds that want to fish it is easy there to access water and get smaller fish. So perfect for 3 year old or little kids. The pond is big and has a cement path all the way around so it's essentially one big circle. You can see the entire place from every point if that gives you a frame of reference to as how big it is. In conclusion, if you want more adventure olander is not the place to go . Like I said olander is good for walking a mile around a pond or biking but to be very honest it's just not that great unless you live next door. I'd never may a day trip to go to olander at all. Oh I forgot they do have a little beach area to swim... again great for small kids. Overall I'd say go to oak openings for more scenery and walking area along with fishing spots that have...
