The park is or was a wonderful forest in the middle of a bustling urban enviroment complete with trails n wildlife rarely seen within a metropolitan area. Sadly though, that part of the park has been fenced off from the public for construction of water run off holding ponds, and so called wetland preservation measures.( Basically most likely storm and sewer drainage lines for future residential construction, which is completely against what Charlotte had wanted. That's WHY the land was given to the school dist. to begin with.) The main part of the park also has seen a transformation. Although most of the blueberry bushes remain some were removed for a neighborhood garden and other future additions. I've lived many years in the neighborhood and always enjoyed walking the trails. I recently even made friends with a spotted owl. There are coyotes, and at least 3 deer that reside there. There's also something larger that pushes shrubbery over like it's ankle high grass, but it's been elusive except for the unrecognizable cry or call it makes in some early mornings of fall. It's sad to think that soon the trees will be logged, and streets staked and another pristine wilderness erased for developers. It's a park to take in, picnic, and sit in the grass(cause that's all you can do now) while it's still there. Let's pray it doesn't come to that and Charlotte's dream stays alive as it has for all...
Read moreAlways a pleasure! The blueberries are just starting to ripen. There are a fee but give it about a week maybe less and this place will be exploding with blueberry and likely alot of blackberry as well. Becareful picking as the maintenance is minimal considering its publicly funded. So the back berry's are a hazard when picking blueberrys. There are certain days when volonteers are welcome to come help to come help to keep it clean and maintain the grounds. I wish more folks would. I personally bring some things with me when I go and always try to help keep some of the blackberry and grass cut back. Overall it's a great place to go with family all ages, your welcome to pick all you like and it's free. Please be respectful and try not to damage the trees and be mindfully of others aswell. Don't let kids wonder to far as it can be tough to find them if they to far. It is open to the public. Unfortunately that means the creepy creepers too. Just be smart. There is plenty of trees and space for distancing. So pick away and then you'll have all you need for blueberry pies, mmmm blueberry muffins, blue berry pancakes, blueberry jelly/jam, blueberry wine, blueberry shrimp ect... Huge thankyou to the community for keeping this place open and thankyou to anyone who makes time to assist in the upkeep of Charlotte's...
Read more2022-August 3rd. I decided to come after a week of 90+ degree heat. There were many ripe berries in with many green berries. (See photos, sorry it's blurry but you get the idea) In an hour I got a decent haul. Maybe a pint? This time I went to the back of the park away from the play structures. There's a lot of unplucked bushes but also a lot of blackberry brambles mixed into them so watch out for that as you reach for a beautiful, plump berry. I would say to wear boots that go over the ankles so you don’t get grabbed by the thorny vines creeping low across the paths. There are also branches/sapling stumps that are waiting to scrape your legs if you're not careful. Lots of butterfly bush in bloom so look out for bees. The berries were so yummy. True old world blueberry flavor. 2019-July 5th. Great place to spend the afternoon picking berries and playing at the new play structure. The blueberries are not very ripe yet. The bushes have tons of green berries on them and I think in about 2 weeks you'll have tons of ripe...
