*This review is coming from someone who was born/grew up in Mexico and in a mexican family with many latin families from different parts of latin america in the area and eating their cooking. Do with it what you will.
The moment you step into the restaurant it has a nice atmosphere that depicts the latin culture with its bright colors and friendly personnel. The smells where inviting as they wrapped around you in an embrace. Which makes one expect grandiose things to come. However it did not live up to the expectations. We had the quesabirria tacos which lacked the taste that is so familiar. Lightly season and not much of a taste to begin with was not helped by the birria stew which is supposed to enhance the flavors. The stew though need help to and it was like seeing two drowning victims trying to help each other out. The stew tasted of of oiled water with some seasoning but not enough to even make me want to slurp it up. With expectations crushed we moved onto the tamales which only redeeming quality was the dough that was properly made and had good taste. However it looked like it did not cook all the way through and seemed to get sadder the more you got to the end. We got the raja tamal which has less kick thank black pepper even though it was supposed to be Rajas. We also had their chips and torta which where definitely better than the dishes beforehand but not enough to say that they where anything but edible. Sadly with all this I would give them and American score of 5/10 and a mexican...
Read moreThe restaurant is inviting with lots of bright color and the young ladies who serve you are very friendly & kind. Ive only ordered once personally, but have known lots of friends who recommend this as authentic & tasty. Unfortunately the Super Burrito I ordered today was not what I expected. I was expecting a wrapped burrito with carne asada, beans, cheese WRAPPED in a shell & foil with sauce on the side in a pkg or container for me to drizzle over burrito. What I got was a plate with beans and rice on side and a shell with some meat soaked heavily in red sauce and a little lettuce tomato sprinkled on top. It was so saucy my husband would not eat it after only taking two bites. I tasted it and it was extremely salty, and bitter. Ive never had a Super Burrito anywhere else that looked like this. If this is their normal Super Burrito I wouldn’t order/recommend again, but I didn’t have a photo to compare, so Im really not sure my order was made correctly. I live close & always try to give local businesses the most of my business, so I will try again, but wont recommend ordering anything you cant see a photo to compare. All the photos in restaurant menu look awesome, they just dont have one for everything...
Read morePizzacoa is pretty good and could be split between two to three people. Birra tacos were decent as well as even the kids burger that wasn't that amazing, but was a decent sized burger and fries for the price. There's a couple of things that make this place stand out for myself, they've changed over the years in a good way and are less greasy. House made tortillas that are done well, and the birra sauce compliments the food that you can dip the tacos, pizzacoa, many items in. I will say that some items are pretty average. For the price, quality and authenticity, it's fantastic. It's competing with some other places very, very close by. I personally like El Taco Bus best for fresh. Taco Guyamas for a really satisfying flavor that's usually cooked well and doesn't feel as heavy but also having the best salsa's, at least before covid. So, to each their own, but Los Tamales is very unique and stacks high in some regards to the rest around here. And these right here all within distance of each other I mentioned are likely the best around possibly including Antojo's. I've eaten at many places around town the other places down 72nd just aren't as good...
