Wright Park is truly one of Tacoma’s gems! It’s a 33-acre urban park that feels like a mix between a botanical garden and a community gathering space. The moment you step in, you’re surrounded by towering, hundred-year-old trees from all over the world that give the park a magical, shaded atmosphere. It’s not just a park, it’s also an arboretum, so tree lovers will appreciate the variety and history here.
At the heart of it all is the Seymour Conservatory, a Victorian-style glasshouse that looks like it belongs in a storybook. Inside, you’ll find a lush collection of tropical plants, seasonal floral displays, and even quirky additions like cacti and Golden Dart Frogs (fun fact: in the wild, they’re considered the most poisonous frogs on Earth, but here they’re safe since their diet is different).
Beyond the conservatory, the park has a beautiful lily pond, fountains, open lawns perfect for picnics, and plenty of walking paths. It’s also very family-friendly with playgrounds and lots of space to run around.
Wright Park has that perfect mix of history, nature, and community. Whether you’re here to stroll among the century-old trees, relax by the pond, or pop into the conservatory, it’s easily one of Tacoma’s most picturesque hidden gems. Best part? Admission is free, with a donation box available if you’d like...
Read moreI live less than a block from this park and walk through it almost every day. It's the local spot for dog walks or lunch on one of the many picnic tables when the sun peeks out. The park is kept very clean which is something of a marvel given the high traffic rate. The true joy of this park, however, is it's delightful history in Tacoma. Built at the turn of the century (the last one, that is!) and maintained with great care, it's exploding with thousands of varieties of tree and bush. Don't forget to wander down to the pond to watch the water features and shoo away the numerous ducks. Up the hill, the conservatory is an even greater treasure. Free (with a suggested and well worth it donation) to the public, the conservatory is absolutely this hillside park's crowning glory and stuffed with beautiful flowers and plants. The park itself has a .9 mi loop where you're likely to find folks out walking their dogs, parents pushing strollers, joggers, and the occasional photographer. A true gem, Wright Park shouldn't...
Read moreFun park, very suited for children with high visibility areas and lots of flat grass for running around. Also features a fun playground with spray park open during the summer. My only worry is that busy streets surround it on three sides. However, there's plenty of distance a kid would have to go to get from the playplace to any of these roads and it's flat ground almost the whole way. If your kid can be trusted, bring a book and relax while lying on one of the wooden features that resemble big spools that have been cut in half. They are surprisingly comfortable. After a day at the park, the greenhouse up the hill is a fascinating and educational destination that will interest both kids and adults. There is a homeless presence at the park, but they are harmless, most of them just sleep or use the bathroom. The only real nuisance on the playground are the occasional rowdy group of teenagers who hang out on the swings and cuss a bunch. All together, a natural Oasis in the middle of a very...
