We did both rooms a couple weeks apart (me, my husband, and two friends) and while they definitely get top points for set design and overall theme and vibe, we got out of the first room in 33 minutes, and the second in 37 minutes, with only one hint in the first room. We are quite experienced players (50+ rooms) but I'm always disappointed to get out of a room that fast, like I didn't get my money's worth. I'm not sure what to say though because it's obviously hard enough for the average player judging by the other reviews. It just felt like there should have been more clues to solve. The room design seems to focus more on having fewer harder puzzles that take longer to solve, rather than more easier puzzles, which makes the pacing weird to me. I'd prefer more easier puzzles, because then you get this problem where experienced players get through it way faster than the novice. I didn't feel like we were rushing through it either, but then we were done and it was over. Some of the clues were really clever and different, but I just wanted more!
I also felt like the staff who kept saying before we got into the rooms that the escape rate was so low could have been a bit more excited about the fact that we got out so fast. Both times we escaped quickly there was really a lackluster response. In the second room they showed us how we actually "brute forced" a clue instead of solving it how it was "supposed" to be solved almost like we were being scolded. It honestly just wasn't that great of a clue and I'm glad we didn't waste time doing it how it was designed. We didn't really brute force it either, we just tried an idea and it happened to work. So the prop just made it easy to open without the "actual" answer. Also there was another clue in the second room that I still don't know how the answer was the answer. We reread the clue so many times and basically brute forced the answer because the clue just didn't make sense. So even after wasting more time than I'd like on that clue we still got out with 20+ minutes left.
I was nervous about it being too scary since I'm not into horror rooms and I jump scare easily, but it actually wasn't as scary as I thought it might be. There is quite a bit of "gore" (i.e. fake blood and body parts, especially in the second room) but it was more the setup and design that made it FEEL more scary. They work really hard to set up the vibe and it pays off.
So they are really great rooms (though the first is better), but I found it a little disappointing as an experienced escape room player that it was so easy to...
Read moreHomicide Hotel, indeed! Like the Universal Studios of Escape Rooms, this experience is immersive from the moment you step foot through the front door onto the Blackmore Hotel mat in the front "lobby." Even the pre-game bathrooms looked exactly like a hotel restroom! Somewhere around the 80th location we've escaped and easily in the top five businesses for optimizing the user experience.
Because we were passing through, we booked both of their rooms at once. With Chris and Derek as our hosts and gamemasters, everything went off without a hitch, and their love for the Homicide Hotel and the escape room industry in general added to the night's enjoyment. Yes, Derek, we look forward to coming back when Chapter 3 opens!
I wouldn't recommend it for younger kids. Our 13-y.o. daughter did fine while our 20-y.o. daughter needed more reassurance throughout, so it just depends on your crew.
With a storyline that plays on the exaggerated but still horrific stories of H.H. Holmes and his Murder Castle, every aspect of this location can keep the fear factor high if you so choose. However, if you just enjoy the puzzles or have extra jumpy players, you can temper the spook with the option for more lighting and playing around with the rubber body parts. The scenes are meant to be murderous and require interacting with disturbing scenes, but there are no live actors grabbing, tasing, etc. nor do you need to get your hands dirty by touching anything but props or put your hands inside any dark holes.
Apart from cursing in a voiceover recording and a prop jar of penises on a high shelf (Lorena Bobbitt must have been in town!), there wasn't anything that you couldn't find in a Spirit Halloween Store.
For the puzzles, there are multiple rooms that came as a complete surprise, and very few padlocks in use. The puzzles were mostly linear but could be evaluated and understood by team members individually while they looked at separate areas. Even so, solutions worked best with teamwork and good...
Read moreBased on other positive reviews, I fully recommend the escape room experience at 303 Escape. It seems like they provide a fun and engaging activity. Just don’t make any mistakes in your booking, as you could be mocked and derided for it.
My fiancé accidentally booked a time for a Friday instead of the weekend, and when we realized the error (while it was still Friday morning and the business was closed), she reached out to request a refund or reschedule. While we fully expected to hear that refunds weren’t their policy, the response from the management was unnecessarily harsh. She was scolded for "not emailing sooner" (even though the business was closed) and was aggressively reminded that "we have to pay our employees" (which is to be expected, but was still roughly communicated).
Mistakes happen, and we were prepared to accept their policies, but the tone and lack of empathy from the management made the experience needlessly unpleasant. A little kindness and professionalism would have gone a long way in this situation. Fully prepared to embrace our mistake, she was scolded like a child and dismissed out of hand.
Again, the experience itself might be fantastic. Were it not for the aggressive customer service, we likely would have continued our patronage. Just don’t expect any sympathy or understanding if something goes wrong. You need only to look at the management's colorful commentary on other reviews to...
