The main trails and boardwalks are absolutely beautiful. We took the deer lick trail and it was like a storybook. I couldn't recommend it more! We saw so many beautiful orchids and other flowers. The trails were well maintained and it was very serene.
Then we went to the family activity trail and it was nothing but mosquitos and prairie. Compared to the other trails it was a complete let down and we got extremely bit up by mosquitoes and didn't get to see anything new. The activities were just informational signs. Would not recommend for kids under the age of 10, and frankly, I wouldn't really recommend it to anyone. The trail leading up to the two lighthouses is conveniently short and accessible, considering that most of it is a raised boardwalk rather than a muddy, partly flooded trail. The boardwalk is almost completely underneath the shade of the dense conifer trees, except for a few spacious clearings where a shallow lake sits in the middle of the clusters of towering evergreen trees. These are ideal spots to take mesmerizing pictures of the forest scenery reflected off the surface of the lake’s water. The snow falling and snow already on the ground made for a magical visit. Learning about the formations, wildlife, and history sure makes you appreciate this gem in our amazing state.
Looking forward to visiting when the seasons change to see all the blooming flowers and different wildlife we heard so much about. Although the winter hike was pretty dang cool too!!
The main building is also beautiful and has a TON of information in it. I'm honestly still in awe from our visit. Loved everything about it, and we will be back!!
