They call this the Trinidad History museum but there is literally no Trinidad history presented. Honestly it could be alleged to be false advertising. The Santa Fe trail exhibit is thin and uninformative, and it gives no historic background of the trail or why people traveled it. This is one of those new museums that does not try to teach or focus on facts. The focus is on individuals’ experiences and that’s it. And then it spends considerable time on how everyone suffered racism and even gender discrimination… in the 1870’s, imagine that. Serious history buffs will be left dissatisfied. The historic homes were closed for maintenance, so they couldn’t rescue the place. I don’t think they discount your ticket when they close the historic homes. Save your money. Go to the museums in Gunnison, Salida, Lake City and elsewhere (all of which are good and actually contain history of the town). The people Trinidad and their visitors...
Read moreThe 2 exhibits they had were ok... its 5 bucks to get in... but a big disappointment as on the website they advertise a block worth of musuem with 4 buildings and beautifully manicured property. We travel from Texas to visit... to be told when we get there all we get to view is one 40 foot long hall of pictures and basic artifacts. We were aloud to walk to grounds which I did have to ask to not so friendly staff person if we could do so. Very disappointing. The property was not well kept at all. I don't expect blooming flowers and green grass this time if year but a little upkeep...

Is it shocking that racism and bigotry was part of some people's history? No, so why is that all that's being shown here? If that's all you're looking for in a museum, this is your museum. There is no genuine and engaging history being told. No reasons for local exploration and travel in the area. Just some generic stories you could read on a post card. Hit up Wikipedia or Google and get some actual information for free.
