Wandered in from one of the restaurants nearby and started reading a sign. I was accosted outside by some red-haired lady, an employee near the visitors center about not paying the $5 admission. I had no idea there was one, as I did not come through the main entrance and wasnt planning on being in there. She, at first, nicely attempted to get me to go inside. I still didn't understand what for at the time, or even who she was, so I said Thanks but I was "OK", not knowing she was an employee and that there was even an admission charge. She then proceeded to come towards me and "explain something to me", as she put it. She asked where I was from. Told her I was not from the area and she asked if I was alone, and I said yes. Then she started to get smart with me and tell me why one of the gates nearby was open from a parking lot (I came through another gate at the other end). I said I was just passing through. She said, rather rudely, "well that's what this is, its a museum and people pay for all these buildings. See those employees over there", Pointing to people just cutting the grass, etc. I still didn't understand what she was talking to me for or what the harshness was about. She was disrespectful at this point. Shes getting loud now too. I finally now realized what was going on and that she did not realize I had come from the other end near Union Market restaurant, where I had parked and eaten, and just started walking around. Anyway, she then says loudly that "Nothing in NJ is free", while walking away. I said that's not true but I understand and started to leave. I was now thinking about going in and paying at this point until...She actually came back up to me, now loudly telling me to tell her one thing in NJ that's free. I mentioned other lighthouses and parks, and she just kept yelling over me how nothing is free, blah, blah, blah. So then I walked out and didn't pay anything. Had this b*tch been nicer, I would have gladly paid the $5 admission once I realized there was one. But what really gets me is the condescending, disrespectful attitude she showed about it, walking up to me in the first place like I personally owed her money, and made me never want to go there again. Had she had just nicely and respectfully explained from the beginning that there was a $5 admission that I must have missed, I would have gone in and paid, not rudely come down from her staircase to "explain things" disrespectfully to me like that. If I was anyone else, she would have gotten herself hurt right then and there. My gf, who was not with me at the time, (good thing for that lady) is not as tolerant as I am. So I decided not to tell her about this "incident" because she would return to that place and deal with that lady. Do not recommend this place as there isn't much to see there anyway, but if you do, watch out for a mean red-haired dyed lady there who acts nice but really isn't. Of course, if you don't accidentally wander in from another entrance where there is no admission sign and need "things explained to you", like I apparently did, you shouldn't...
Read moreWent here with my parents as part of our Long Beach Vacation on Sunday May 9th 2024. This is a museum that has lots of history and lots to do. I would start inside the main building, where there is exhibitions on the railroad of tuckerton and long beach, on the lighthouse, and on coast guards. very informative and interesting. Side note: the museum entrance is a bit confusing, as we almost drived into the musuem, first one has to park in a parking lot which is straight, and one passes the entrance. We also entered the building and the front desk person was very friendly and showed us the attraction and handed us a map. So anyways, we entered the main building first. The main building also has the lighthouse, which cost $5.00 per person to climb. My dad did it, and the view is of the small lake. The other buildings are outside, walkable and are a copy of old times. There is a boathouse, surf shop, clam and oyster shop, and various other buildings. There is also activities in some of the buildings where one can experiment for themselves on how it is like to fish for clams for instance. Overall had a great time here. Highly recommend to...
Read moreI had seen the advertisement for this place for Christmas the picture of the beautiful black horse and said you could buy sleigh rides but it also boasted of how beautiful was for an old fashioned Christmas and to come and see it. So I am I family of 5 traveled an hour and a half to get there and we are very sadly disappointed. It was very dimly lit rather depressing for Christmas atmosphere and it was just nothing what it said it would be it was such a big letdown we were very disappointed. But on the bright side the stores were cute inside. The people who dealt with the customers were nice. It just had a very disappointing Christmas atmosphere. It just was a very depressing looking place and dismal. It does however have a lot of potential if the people who put this affair on but just get together throughout the year put extra money aside and really light up the place with all kinds of streaming Christmas lights and just pretty things not gaudy. It'll be turned into a much better place because it did look very depressing. We came in the evening especially just to see the lighting and...
