I've been a singer/songwriter for... well let's just say 50+ years. A few days ago I was at a local writer's night and my trusted guitar was stolen from the area where musicians put their instruments for the evening. Mine wasn't the only one taken, but it was the only one that effected me. My daughter and I visited pawn shops the next day in hopes of finding my guitar...or finding something to replace it with. There are 3 shops in my town. This is a sore story for me so I'll just cut to the chase. None of the jerks in any of the pawn shops in Manchester, TN knew anything about anything. They weren't even aware of the tobacco spit dribbling off their chins. You would think, customarally, a proprietor would greet customers when they enter the establishment. No one even looked up at us. When my daughter and I got a look at the inventory they offered we understood why. Nobody would want that garbage and they wouldn't know what to do if someone brought them something of any value. If my guitar ended up there it would be forgotten or worse. We had errands to run, prescriptions to pick up in Tullahoma, etc. On the way through Tullahoma we pulled into KK's Loans Music & Jewelry. They had a big red sign that said "MUSIC" that had always been a worm on a hook to me. Well, today was the day I bit. As soon as I walked in two different people spoke to me. I don't know about you, but that carries me miles. At any rate, they hadn't heard anything about my stolen guitar (of course not), but I took a few minutes to look at what they had on the rack. There was nothing cheaper than a Fender acoustic. They took their time with me. Let me play any guitar I wanted and were flexible. The guy that eventually worked the deal with me was not just a counterman. He was a knowledgeable picker. I just can't recommend these guys enough. I ended up with a Takamine GY93E. Ain't...
Read moreI wasn't sure what to expect upon entering - I love shopping at thrift stores, but shy away from pawn shops...don't get me wrong, I have used them to sell jewelry before, but never actually shopped at one. Pawn shops have always had a negative connotation I guess...and when you walk into one, it just seems intimidating. I also hate the "salesman" mentality - and I don't know if these guys get commissions but I have always wanted to play guitar and I struck jackpot at the Tullahoma when I went in browsing. Matt W took the time to talk to me about music and his music history, as well as gave me a sample lesson in order for me to understand the differences in guitars. I wasn't really sure what I was looking for, whether I wanted to play bass or acoustic, and he talked to me about the differences. Having someone take the time without a hidden agenda is great, especially when there is intimidation - and I know now that guitar might not be for me, I might just stick with karaoke nights at the pub because I prefer singing - but I really appreciate the in-depth understanding so I could make an intelligent decision. Matt was super knowledgable, not intimidating, and didn't make me feel stupid...I definitely plan on going back, my son has asked for drums for Christmas...so I am definitely going to go talk to Matt and see what they have in stock - hopefully they sell them with earplugs....
