Rockwood park not only offers a clean and beautiful views but for its large array of activities for families and hobbiest alike. There is special dog zone within the park that allows for pet owners to meet and their pets to roam and play. Further, there is massive base- ball field for professional or friendly play. Archery practice which is in a niche in the walking trail , just follow the signs. Picnic tables and gazebos are made available for groups to come together but not disturbed by the hobbiest and sport activities. These can be found well into the nature trail. Speaking of nature there is an exibit as well. Families will enjoy the children's playground and sandbox as it has slides and climbing combined into one and it's set up to meet the play needs of kids to teens. Read moreOne of my favorite parks in the area. Trails are great, varying degrees of difficulty, so there is something for everyone. The playground has always been pretty good. But it just got new equipment so it is bigger now. Ruff House Dog Park is awesome. Rockwood has plots of land you can rent each year for farming/gardening. I think it's $15 per plot... Maybe a 10 by 10 or something close to it. They provide water facilities at each garden area too. The plots are at the far ends of the park. Rockwood has a good sports complex too. Lots of baseball fields and basketball courts, racketball, tennis, archery ranges, etc. There is also a really cute nature center in the middle of the park. The staff is always friendly and knowledgeable. The county holds lots of events at Rockwood throughout the year. They also hold all sorts of classes from sports to fitness to educational classes about animals and nature. They do hosted trips as well. A few times each year a group meets at Rockwood and goes on guided hikes, river rafting, kayaking, canoeing, etc, at other locations across VA. The trips are inexpensive and transportation is usually provided and included in the cost...
Read moreThe overall park itself is great. From basketball to tennis to pickleball courts, to baseball & softball fields, there is something for everyone to do. There is also a great playground in the center, and multiple restrooms around when those moments call.
I can't go 5 stars due to the dog park unfortunately. We visited that aspect of the park for our first time today. When we arrived it was in the 80s/90s. We found two shaded areas for the dogs, one on each end of the park. In the center of the park was a water spigot. Unfortunately this was shut off, eliminating any water for the dogs. I couldn't find any area to turn the water on, and I couldn't find any water sources in the small dog area. There seems to be another large dog area with a spigot, but there was a chain lock around it so I couldn't see if that one worked. We were lucky that we had a dog bowl with us, and that a spigot had a head attached/was available at the nearest restroom.
I don't know if this was a one off regarding the spigot, or if I did something wrong. But not having water available, or a notification that owners need to bring water for their pets, is an oversight...
