I contracted with Gingko Gardens in Spring 2022 to design and implement a 350 sq. ft. private urban roof garden at my condo near Catholic University with a budget of no more than $6,000. The project, while straightforward enough, had one huge catch: there was no water source on the roof! Landscape designer Thomas Kapfer's brilliant solution was to create the roof top deck garden around something quite new on the market, a "self-watering planter" from Canada. My large rectangular planters have a water reservoir in the bottom of the planter than can hold 20 gallons of water for about 6 weeks, so no need for regular watering for long periods of time even when there is no rain. The planters are filled with a variety of sun-loving, drought-resistant,sweet-smelling perennials, such as Russian sage, catmint, butterfly plants, hummingbird flowers, grasses and 2 vines, honeysuckle and a tangerine trumpet vine. I plan on enjoying this garden, which took about 5 months from first contact on the shop's web site to final installation, for years to come. And I am sure it has significantly enhanced the value of my condo when it comes time to sell - not an unimportant consideration these days.

My first impression of this place is that it's a garden where plants are available to be taken home. The outdoor space is absolutely brimming with happy plants of all sizes so much do that it spills out onto the sidewalk out front. The indoor space has two levels. The second level is accessible by stairs and has a very lovely balcony with more plants and outdoor furnishings. I didn't notice an ADA option to ascend. It would likely be a tough store to navigate anyhow with such narrow aisles all around. Parking is available on the street. Read the signs because some spots are affected by the school nearby. They had a great variety of planters from basic nursery plastic to ceramic and even brushed metal. As you can imagine the nice ones are pricey as are the larger plants. Furnishings and racks can also be purchased here. They even have terrarium components. Literally whatever you may need for basic indoor and outdoor gardening is under this roof. Go check it out!

I don’t live in the city and only make a couple of trips a month to it. In early July I bought a calathea and and hanging plant basket from here. That same night I was getting ready to use the planter and while adjusting the first hanging strap, it just broke, I was as gentle as could be but the plastic material was of inferior quality and just snapped. I wasn’t happy cause that meant I had to make another trip for the return and overall I wasn’t happy with the bad quality of the hanging basket.

Today 7/26/2020 I went back to return the item, I told the nice lady at the door I was returning and item and the reason for doing so, she was ok with it and told me to wait for a cashier. I went to the cashiers and told one of them I needed to return the item because it broke, he said I couldn’t return it because I broke it. I tried to explained that it wasn’t my fault because the product quality was bad, if he took the time to inspect the item he would’ve gotten a good idea but he refuse and kept repeating that I broke it like 8 times, at this point I got mad and asked for a manager and his name which I was never given, it turns out the manager was the lady who greeted me at the door and she gave me a refund on the other cashiers register. The cashier just kept giving a death glare and I was just supper mad and I just told him to stop looking at me like that, and told him that as a customer I have every right to return a product that didn’t work or was defective.

I was gonna buy more plants but I’m never going back here, no matter how nice some of...

To Whom It May Concern,

I am a regular customer at your store and appreciate the quality of your plants and gardening supplies. However, I am writing to express my concern regarding a safety issue I encountered this morning.

When I arrived, the sidewalk was heavily cluttered with potted plants, making it difficult to navigate safely. This situation is particularly dangerous given the high traffic in the area. I nearly collided with both an employee and the plants on the ground. When I raised my concerns about the safety hazard, the employee responded inappropriately, telling me that I had no right to be on the sidewalk.

Such a response was uncalled for. The appropriate reaction would have been to acknowledge the issue and apologize for the inconvenience. Instead, I was reprimanded for bringing up a legitimate safety concern. Unfortunately, I was unable to address this in person at the time as I was heading to work.

While I understand that the area in front of your store may not see much foot traffic from non-customers, it is important to ensure that the public sidewalk remains accessible and safe for everyone. Blocking the sidewalk not only poses a risk to pedestrians but also reflects poorly on your store.

I hope you will address this issue promptly to prevent any future incidents and ensure a safe...

Nice neighborhood store if you want to buy some plants. However, I CANNOT RECOMMEND for landscaping services. I recently contracted them to remove some trees from my yard and do basic landscaping, and on this I would give barely one point only because once they finally did the work, it was good. But they were extremely uncommunicative and for weeks would not respond despite multiple emails from me. They finally gave me a date for works and then did not show up. Finally a month later after I threatened to cancel the contract and ask for my (incredibly expensive) deposit back, finally they said "oh, look, we found space for you tomorrow." The entire work took about max of 10 hours (one and a quarter days). Mark said there was "one job" ahead of me in July (already several months after I'd given them the deposit so I could "get in line"), which is just not credible given the small amount of work that my yard ended up requiring when they finally got to me in September. I should not have harangue them by email dozens of times and resort to threats to get some basic communication.

Actual work was good, efficient, they cleaned up the area and no complaints on that side, but incredibly frustrating and bad customer service. I will be looking elsewhere for my...
