Metropolitan Community Church was the first church built by the gay community in North America. When the community came together and wanted a church space of its own, there were church properties for sale elsewhere in the District, but none of the owners of those other properties would sell them to the gay community for use as a church. The community instead had to build their own building from the ground up, and that is where the Metropolitan Community Church still is today.

During the peak of the AIDS epidemic, churches elsewhere in the District refused to hold funerals for deceased gay people. It was very difficult to find a place to be buried as a gay person in the District. The Metropolitan Community Church conducted funeral services for all people, regardless of whether the person was a member of its church.
