Florence Thomas Art School — Attraction in West Jefferson

Back in September I took a wonderful two day beginner/intermediate oil painting class at the Florence Art School. I can't say enough good things about this place, but I will try. For me it was an introduction, and I couldn't have asked for a better one. There were nine of us students, everyone masked and safely distanced during this time of pandemic, in a large classroom space surrounded by paintings by Florence Thomas herself, who the school and gallery is named after. It's amazing to me how much information and demonstration time the instructor, Addren Doss, packed into the two days while still allowing us plenty of time to practice. The classroom takes up about half of the facility, the gallery the other. And what a beautiful top-notch gallery! There is a also a small art supply shop. It's a jewel in the town of West Jefferson, North Carolina, which is filled with many interesting shops, galleries, good restaurants, a couple of breweries, and even a cheese factory! I just picked up a paint brush for the first time in my life. I participated in Lee Robinson’s class that teaches Bob Ross’ painting technique. It was a low stress, nonjudgmental environment, perfect for my first attempt at painting. Lee was patient and encouraging. The staff at the school were friendly and helpful and the classroom environment was bright and inspiring. Snacks and clean restrooms rounded out the day. I am already planning my next class. Local couple, First Time taking a class at Florence Art School. My Husband and I signed up for the beginners stain glass class. It was something we had both wanted to learn. “Ian Wilson”was an amazing teacher. Also took home a memorable first time “Stain Glass Maple Leaf, night light and sun catcher!” A keep sake for the perfect date night, if your looking for something different and educational!
