Magic Johnson Park, I am so blessed to live next to such an amazing property! Me exercise is golf and while I know your not suppose to it's all I do! If I had to just walk around in circles I would loose it! So being a golfer and walking through the grass I am really appalled at the lack of serious grounds maintenance! I honestly can't Identify the creature they call "grass" out there other than to say it dies quick without water and growes fast with it! Watering at the park seems to take place from busted sprinkler lines underground that form beautiful green swamps in areas and thats about it! There are so many areas that are browned out to stuble or plain dirt, (I won't even talk about the dirt and weed patch they call "soccer fields) it amazing that I find any where to golf or others any w here to picnic but the park is big and there are still some green areas despite the lack of maintenance! And Yeah! Soon it will all be fine cause they got a lot of money and have great plans to fix everything and add even more stuff that after it a) done they can fail to maintain! Sorry for the pessimistic attitude but I love tjis park and for the last four years have had to deal with the neglect and apathy of the park district whatching kids play soccer on dirt, young girls taking their quinceara pics on the ghetto bridge, that even after offering to take up a collection we couldn't get the park district to paint! But hey I am always amazed at how beautiful the sunsets can be over the lakes and the birds add an awesome affect and the families still come and the kids play and all and all it does what it was built to do and that is get people out of doors in a safe area and thats about the best thing I can say! I Love Magic...
Read moreI've visited this park since a child. They have done a lot of changes to make it look better. It is near the center of some of the worst neighborhoods in Southern Cali so expect to see some unpleasant people around. You will see trash and the lake water isn't the cleanest, but it's still a nice place for recreational use. There is plenty of space for sports (soccer, football, ultimate frisbee), use of an RC if you're into the hobby (drones, car, plane, boat), a lake to fish (120th st. has the closest parking lot to the fishing lake), many paths (walk, jog or ride a bike) and a playground with splash pad for the children during the summer. There are different type of species to admire throughout the year so take some binoculars if you like to bird watch. If you're an adult visiting this park, be sure to act like one. I've seen plenty of adults, such as parents, litering and feeding the animals junk food. You can clearly see the birds and turtles spit it out. Don't set these type of examples for your children because they might not be the only one that are watching the bad influence. Those examples are the reason why adults have that bad habit. They make it a normal thing to do for themselves and others follow. Its the most common thing to do is bring bread crumbs or at least some bits of tortillas to feed the birds if you don't want to buy bird food from a pet shop. Another common thing to do is to throw away trash in a...
Read moreThis is one of my closest parks with a lake that you can fish at. The park is/had been currently renovated and is definitely a lot more aesthetically pleasing than it has been in the past. There are also some cameras in some of the walking/running paths/areas. It's nice to see them making an effort to keep the community safer.
Unfortunately there is still a large part of patrons that visit and leave trash or are just inconsiderate about the wildlife. As long as you pick up after yourself and try and leave it cleaner than you found it, it will stay beautiful for years to come.
One side of the lake can't be fished so keep an eye out for signs (north side of I'm not mistaken). Some nice shaded areas you can put a rod holder in the ground and relax.
But definitely catch and release, I'm unsure of the stocking schedule here so catch and release helps keep the fish populations up so that we have a decent place to fish for...
