I stopped by Your Home Marketplace today from out of town--arriving 30 minutes before closing time. I could tell immediately that we were not wanted there. The staff was quite unfriendly and unwelcoming. An employee almost knocked me down several times trying to close things down and remove Memorial Day sale signs. Additionally, the selection of merchandise offered had gone downhill from my last stop there several months ago. My sister and I have purchased multiple items at this store over the past few years. Finally, and most importantly, CUSTOMERS BEWARE, as I was checking out this afternoon, I noticed a sign at the register that indicated there is a 3.5% additional charge for both credit and debit card purchases. I inquired about this charge as I shop weekly at a FRIENDLY consignment store in Hickory that only charges a fee for credit card purchases--NEVER my debit card, which I always use. They always give me a chance to input my PIN number into their machine. Your Home Marketplace does not! They simply ran my debit card as a credit card, with no PIN option and charged me the additional 3.5% surcharge. I just now did a Google search on this matter, and here is my result: "Businesses in the United States cannot charge a surcharge on debit card transactions, even when the card is processed as a credit card. Surcharges are specifically limited to credit card transactions, and all major card brands, including Visa and Mastercard, prohibit them on debit card payments." My card is a Visa debit card with the State Employees Credit Union. I find this action by Your Home Marketplace to be a deceitful and unethical practice because they are simply going against what is allowed and being dishonest with their customers as a means to pocket extra money. When I questioned the sales lady about this, she told me next time to bring cash or a check to make payment to avoid this charge. In today's world, who carries either? I never carry cash, and I have not owned checks for many years. After all, how do you know beforehand how much cash to carry for -anticipated purchases? This is not a safe practice these days. Although, I have enjoyed shopping at Your Home Marketplace in the past, today's overall experience will likely prevent me and others I share this with from shopping there in the future. There are other better options in Winston-Salem...
Read moreI was stunned by the hostile tone of the salesperson today. I had seen an item a month ago when the dealer had a 30% off sale, and decided to make an offer today somewhat in line with the 30% off. When I asked if I could make a dealer such an offer, the salesperson responded in a curt, sarcastic tone, "Well, you can offer anything you like, but..." She then proceeded to leave the dealer a voicemail, not referencing the recent 30% discount, only stating the original price and current price. When she got off the phone I told her I would have wished that she had mentioned the 30% off sale. "I don't have to tell her about a recent sale, she knows what she had it listed as. Do you want me to call you with her answer?" I asked if she knew when she might hear back. "I don't have any idea what these people are doing, or what's going on in their personal lives. I don't know when she will get back to me." All this in an extremely hostile tone. Then she asked again if I wanted her to call me, and as I was counting to 10 (so as not to respond in outrage at her rudeness), she waited about 2 seconds and then said "I'll take that as a no." I will never go in this store again. I have no idea what the saleswoman's (heaven forbid this was a manager or the owner) problem was, but she had no call to take it out on a customer who was just trying to make an...
