A charming place to take things slow. Perhaps I should give this place 3 stars. I think there are ways they could improve a lot. But at the same time I really liked this place so I want to give it 5 stars. So I split the difference and give it 4 stars. Things I liked a lot. The breakfast is simple but served with a smile. They make changes every day so you can try something different (different soup, different fried noodles) if you find eggs and toast boring. The gardens are well tended and a joy to walk through. The villas have an pre war feel to them that is very charming. The "trendy" wing where the more modern hotel rooms are doesn't disturb the esthetic. The swimming pools are well tended and have friendly staff. Many of the rooms are recently redone with new bathrooms. Rarely have a problem getting a bed next to the pool. Things that I think are charming that might bother others. The villas are old fashioned in some ways. There's no screen on the balcony door or windows so you can't open the window or doors without getting bugs inside. The doors are old wood so they look pretty but don't latch easily (locking isn't a problem though). The walls are a bit thin so noisy neighbors could be a problem. But you get to hear birds in the morning. And your are fat from street noise so that's not an issue. Things that could improve. The kitchen is slow. Very slow. So order your food while you're at the pool. And, as is typical with a hotel restaurant, you will pay almost twice as much for a meal you could get in town. Coffee and drinks too. They need more staff at the desks. They are friendly and helpful but you might have to wait as they might have one person at the desk assisting you, answering phones and calling taxis. Biggest problem (maybe good though) is it's on the edge of town. If you just want to stay at a hotel it's fine. But if you want to go into town and try local food or shop you need to get a shuttle or taxi or bike. It's not far. Hoi An is pretty small. But it's not convenient if your want to take in the local area. Being away from town though means it's quiet and cheap and...
Read moreLet me tell you, Da Nang was a blast, but Hoi An stole the show! Especially the Silk Village. Now, I wasn't sure what to expect. Silk scarves at every turn? Tourist trap? But wow, was I wrong.
The Silk Village was this beautiful complex nestled right outside the main town. It wasn't crowded, which surprised me, and had this really peaceful vibe. Lush gardens, old brick buildings, the whole place felt steeped in history.
We opted for a guided tour, and let me tell you, our guide, Lan, was amazing. She knew everything about silk production, from the fat silkworms munching on mulberry leaves (weird, but fascinating!) to the intricate hand-weaving on the looms. We even got to try our hand at weaving! Let's just say my masterpiece will never be mistaken for haute couture, but it was a fun experience.
The Silk Village wasn't just a show-and-tell though. They have this incredible showroom with every kind of silk product imaginable - dresses, scarves, table runners, the works. The quality was unreal, and the colors were just stunning. Of course, I ended up treating myself to a scarf (or two...), but it felt more like supporting a local art form than a souvenir purchase.
Overall, the Silk Village was a delightful surprise. It's a perfect way to spend an afternoon in Hoi An, learning about the town's heritage and maybe even taking home a little piece of it...
Read moreI have no idea how this place gets such good reviews. We were really looking forward to our stay and have felt so let down. We checked into our room and found the bed to be unbelievely noisy, so we rung reception as we were staying for three nights and wanted to make sure we were going to get a decent sleep. We came back after an evening out and they told us they had changed the mattress but this made no difference, they moved us to another room which was just as bad and then moved us into their new hotel block which is pretty standard and the rooms still have teething issues. The air con doesn't work properly (had to keep getting up in the night to turn it back on), it doesn't have a proper bathroom (you better be VERY comfortable with whoever you're sharing a room with) and the shower floods the toilet area. It also sounded like someone was moving chairs all night above our room. The icing on the cake is that I saw on Tripadvisor someone had mentioned there were building works going on so I emailed them before we stayed and I was told they had finished. I'm now laid by the pool listening to them drilling. We can't even lay by the other pool as they are carrying out building works at the restaurant directly next to it!! The only nice thing is the pool area but it seems a lot of hotels in Hoi An...
