We initially visited to taste the dipping sauce made from fermented shrimp. The tasting platter served with the dipping sauce is very popular with the locals. In fact, you will notice that it is literally the only thing anyone is ordering. For that reason, you can expect local prices. We visited twice and appeared to be the only outsiders present on both occasions.
The owner was explaining to us that the reason the dipping sauce is so popular is because the bottled varieties available in the shops are not as flavourful and the ingredients are not as fresh as those used in their family recipe.
Due to the fermented shrimp ingredient, the first thing you will notice upon arrival is the bad smell of the sauce. If you have an adventurous palate, don't let the smell put you off ordering the popular tasting platter. The sauce has a very strong taste which is not for everyone. We enjoyed it.
Although the locals apparently prefer to go elsewhere (probably home) for the other dishes on the menu, the other things we tried were delicious. The owner, who speaks good English, offered to cook us a four course meal using whatever fresh ingredients she could source at the local market, if we came back the next day. We took her offer and were very impressed with the food we were served.
The quality of the food warrants the five star rating. Unfortunately the beers were not chilled, but I believe this is because the locals just use ice to chill everything (including beer). The paper used for the napkins is not particularly absorbant, but you can just wash your hands using the tap coming from the wall. The location of the restaurant is a ten minute walk from the main tourist area, which is perhaps another reason why we didn't see any tourists. If you are looking for a local experience I highly recommend going out of your way to visit this...

If you’re searching for this specific dish then you must be okay with the strong taste and smell that comes with Mam Tom and this place does it perfectly!!
The tofu and Cha on the dish were fried to perfection, the herbs were a great compliment to the otherwise stinky smell and the lady serving me was super kind showing me how to eat it!!
Must come, pricing is the same for locals and tourists.

Read moreVery friendly owner, helped us order, and made sure we knew how to eat everything and that we were happy with our order. Everything was quite tasty, especially the octopus (her recipe). Be warned that the tasting plate comes with a pungent sauce made of shrimp paste, but we used the sauce from the octopus plate and it was delicious! Frequented mainly by locals—we were the only foreigners here. They were out of half the menu when we arrived at 8pm, so I suspect you should...
