Unimpressed with a number of things - most notably the abhorrent cleanliness of the kitchen (not to mention safety and hygiene issues), crappy wifi forcing us to use data, and cockroaches crawling around the rooms (able to scuttle in because of huge gaps under the doors).
What they did well - the staff are friendly and on it with cleaning the rooms and bathrooms. The laundry facilities were easy to use with lots of drying space. Very convenient for buses as it is literally across the street and also for Dingo’s Fraser Island tours as they depart from the hostel. Our AC worked in the room and we had quite a bit of space to organise our bags, but no lockers and this does leave you at risk of cockroaches…
We were taken aback by the filthy kitchen - found a mouldy pot (picture attached), grim tea towels, dishes stacked high either side of the sink, hob that went up in flames when lighting, flies and birds roaming around, and fridges that are falling apart. We avoided the pool as it was quite literally green and the shower in our room flooded the bathroom because it was aimed poorly and there was no curtain.
Overall, they need a complete revamp and deep clean, kitchen needs a gutting and some major TLC. But, convenient if you’re only stopping briefly on your...
Read moreI didn't have the best stay at Freedom. I was there for 3 nights and opted for a private room upgrade. It seems that the private rooms are in the old block which as you approach seems like a building site. The pavement surface leading up to the block entrance was so broken, bumpy and uneven it was near impossible to roll my suitcase on it. I then did my back in (which is already bad) lugging it up to the top floor as there was no lift.
The room itself had a nice balcony with a good view and was perfectly functional. I appreciated the toiletries and access to a fridge plus teas and coffees.
There were no blankets however and only one sheet on the bed so I got chilly at night. Also the bathroom was a wet room so everything got wet with no shelves or rails to put my things and towels on.
The wifi didn't work when I arrived and others in my group reported it not working for them too. When I raised this with the front desk they initially said there 'wasn't any more they could do to be honest' until I believe a more senior colleague came along and gave me an alternative connection so clearly there was another option(!) Good customer service is all about offering an apology and a solution...
Paying $160/night I expected more...
Read moreThis is without a doubt the most disgusting and dirty hostel in Australia. I’d be warned by many people during my trip that this hostel was disgusting but I wasn’t expecting it to be as horrendous as it was. The kitchen is disgusting, you have to spark the hob up yourself and you’ll be lucky if you don’t burn yourself in the process. Don’t bother cleaning up as the sink is filthy, your plates will only come out dirtier. In all honesty I’ve only used the kitchen three times and I’m convinced I may need a tetanus jab. My family owns two restaurants in the UK and I know for a fact this kitchen wouldn’t pass a health and safety inspection so don’t use it. Furthermore the rooms aren’t any better, there was mold on the walls and on the bed frame. There was rust on the toilet roll holder and I even found a cockroach in the bathroom one day. No matter what I did I felt dirty in this hostel. So whatever you do don’t stay here, either save a bit more money and go somewhere nicer or stay next door at Pippies Beach House. This hostel is foul and quite frankly needs to be closed down immediately as it...
