We roll in on a warm summer’s day, set up camp on the lush grass near the entrance, and take in the scene. Big 4 Ulverstone. A “classic,” they call it. Not sure what that means, but if it’s a euphemism for “half permanent residents,” then yeah, sure, classic.
These aren’t just caravans; they’re fixtures. Wheels long buried, annexes bolted on in a patchwork of plywood and desperation. A DIY architectural fever dream—if shantytown chic is your thing, you’ll feel right at home.
So what makes a great caravan park? For me, it’s simple—no permanents. This one? It leans more Manila back alley than coastal getaway. It’s got the basics: toilets, showers, a place to park your rig. But unless you’re just passing through, I’d look elsewhere.
If you want something with a little more polish, a little more soul, head to Mersey Bluff Caravan Park in Devonport. Ocean views, a vibe you can actually taste. It’s the kind of place you wake up and think, yeah, this is where I want to be.
Edit: Forgot to add (downgraded to 1 star), the caretaker allows his schnauzer to roam free around the park as he works. While the park rules dictate that all dogs need to be on-lead. Probably why we found a present waiting for us when...

We had a family budget cabin so shouldn't have expected too much, but the bed was really uncomfortable which really put a downer on the trip, being constantly tired made everything that little bit harder.
The kitchen and communal areas were very clean and had everything you needed.
The budget cabin we had included a stove top and and electric dry pan, decent size fridge and reverse cycle air conditioning. It was a very small cabin but had some clever use of space and storage.
Not a hell of a lot to do in Ulverstone, but we went for a family gathering and was good to be close to everyone.
The kids enjoyed the bunks and the common areas. It's very close to a couple of decent parks/playgrounds for the kids.
The bowls club next door did some decent food and had cheap drinks too!
Would give it 5* if it had decent mattresses. The kids had thin foam mattresses and we had a low end double end mattress on our bed. Which cost us a good night sleep.
That said we upgraded from a powered site due to the weather, and it would have been worse in the tent on the...
