Stayed 3 nights with 1 night as an HH point redemption. Location is this HGI's best attribute. Room is good size. Service is good. Hotel is 100% green on its energy source. HGI overseas are always much better than their bland US versions. Travelled with the wife and daughter.
Location. It is at the center of the city. Hotel des Monnaise Metro is a 2 minute walk. Across the street is a Dominos Pizza and a few restaurants. At least 2 convenience stores within a block. Four minute walk going west of Rue Jordan had to be the most eclectic dining scene in Brussel which appears frequented by locals, at very good prices. Start your walking tour at Porte de Hal going to the Grand Palace and you will pass by Brussels top sites. Fifteen minute walk is Marollen, a haven for thrifting, antiquing, a flea market and lots of dining options. Sundays have a huge farmers market just outside Midi station
Transport. Brussels Midi is about 20 minutes or take the Metro, 3 stops away. Midi took us on day tours via trains to Cologne and Ghent. Connect to the airport on Bus 12, just outside Trone Metro.
Room. We had the Queen with a sofa. The room is good size with a kitchenette. Split bathroom with a separate shower and toilet area. Lots of storage/closet space. The sofa is primarily for seating. Sleeping on it is not nice on the back as the middle portion where the 2 cushions meet does not offer any support. (too increase support, insert a folded sheet in between cushions).
Breakfast. Complementary for Diamond members, just mention the room number to the hostess. Wide selection to include a fresh orange juicer, build-your-own-yogurt, pump your own multiple varieties of Nutella and fruit jams.
Superb staff. Breakfast crew are on it even on the busiest surge of diners. Front desk crew are also superb. Upon check in, we got a drink voucher good at the bar or the small store.
Others. Ice and water dispensers beside the reception desk/at the store. Lobby doubles as a bar during evenings. There is a nice and airy garden patio between the two hotel towers.
Took 1 star off as it took a few tries to get 2 extra pillows. Got 1 right away but the 2nd pillow seemed problematic so I had to go down and get it myself. The faucet at the toilet was sealed shut and seemed to be a well known issue....not sure why it was shut. There was the kitchen faucet outside the toilet to use. The other sink/faucet at the bathroom worked fine.
Resounding YES that I will be back next time around...
Read moreI I travel to Brussels on a regular basis 2-4 nights per month for most of the last 3 years and have stayed here the majority of the time. Overall, highly recommended: The rooms are well laid out, good facilities and also amazingly clean. Mini bar is left empty (preferred), although I think you can ask for it to be filled and they provide nearby water fountains on each floor and re-usable glass bottles to put in the fridge - it's a great, environmentally friendly, cheap, efficient solution! For business travellers in particular it is good as they also include an iron and ironing board in the room too (some hotels nearby only have a "ironing suite" that is a half-sized room that you have to share with the entire hotel and it wastes a LOT of time walking to and fro, even when there aren't queues to use an iron. Another convenience item (for early Eurostar departures) is that they don't force you to check-in small bags at breakfast time - I appreciate you can't have breakfast clogged with full sized suitcases, but it is infuriating to waste time storing and retrieving bags when you are on a tight timeline and want to be in and out in 10mins, departing before 06.40 and your "suitcase" has a 30cm x 40cm footprint and will sit on a chair (which should be the guideline for a "small bag" IMO)... and some hotels insist that they need the space, even at 6.30am in an empty restaurant; note that Doubletree do NOT force you to do this! Good location (10-15min metro to Gare du Midi / Louise) and 10-15min walk to most of the centre of Brussels - it's on the edge of the tourist/business areas, so I really wouldn't recommend walking North at night in particular, but if you're heading South, it's a safe area as you're straight into pedestrianised shopping mall / shopping streets. Over nearly three years, the only real concerns I've had were the electrics kept tripping in one room (2 years ago, not seen this since), 3/4 lifts weren't working for about 5 months (now fixed) and most recently I had a room where the insulation must have been removed from the room above and I had a very restless and/or heavy upstairs neighbour: woken up with load crashing noises at 1am, 2am, 3am, 5am, etc... it's been a one-off, but was NOT pleasant to go into work so tired the next day! Overall it's a good hotel, good location and generally...
Read moreArrived on day 1 of a 4 day stay. Only one electric power point on one side of the bed. My partner uses a medical equipment to breath when he sleeps. No other convenient places to plug in or charge cell phones. Then we discovered the shower drain was blocked. We could not call the desk or housekeeping because the phone didn't work. Also noticed there wasn't a list of phone numbers on or near the phone. We went down stairs to report the blocked drain and was told the problem would be fixed the next day. We saw the desk manager the next morning (day 2 of 4) and were told we would be refunded for day one, the drain would be fixed, the phone fixed while we went out for the day. When we returned at 2:3 pm, nothing had been done. Again we went to the front desk and were told the wrong room was looked at and had no problem so our room was not fixed (including beds made). My partner requested that the beds be made, the drain fixed and an electric extension cord be provided immediately. The operation manager decided to come to our room door, bang loudly and then aggressively complain to us FOR COMPLAINING, saying we "must have left a do not disturb sign on our door". We weren't provided with a do not disturb sign to begin with! He then began insulting us saying he "pitied our grandchildren for having us as grandparents". What?! When either one of us made any attempt to address the problems we had complained about, he would put up his hands and turn his back to us. After realizing he had insulted us, lost his temper and was being unreasonable, he called housekeeping, brought an electric extension cord but continued to be rude. The phone was never fixed and was unusable. The hand sink stayed plugged up. I went to the front desk and requested the general managers phone or email and was told ,"we don't have it. Just use the email for the operation manager!!! The man who was rude to us?? 👎 No. We checked out to discover no one had refunded the first day, but we did get the name of the general manager and his email. We stayed here a year ago and it was fabulous 👌 👏! We will never...
