I don't know what this place was like before covid, but the first thing we noticed was a lack of covid concern. The debit machine was covered in fingerprints. Isn't it supposed to get wiped off between every use? We almost got charged $50 for 2 extra people we didn't have in our party but we (not the staff) noticed the total was way off. The main stairs say not to go up and down at the same time as other people, but everyone ignored the sign. No more than 3 people in the kitchen at a time but no one paid attention to that either. It's a shared kitchen tho so people were about 6 feet apart. Till at night when everyone hung out in there. Disinfectant sprays are everywhere to wipe things down, but we saw maybe two other people besides us use it? The kitchen had "freebies" to help yourself to. I got a really nice cider out of it, so that was cool. This has to be the only place you can still use a pool table too! No one cleaned it or the sticks and we watched a whole bunch of different people play. They said they clean everything that gets touched constantly, but I noticed dirt for days. There was hair, dust and a wrapper under the bed in our room. The bathrooms were okay but 2 of them ran out of soap. Does a hostel have a liquor license? They told us all the bars and restaurants close early so we should buy liquor and drink it there. That was cool till people stayed up every night. One night over a dozen people were up after 1am! People smoked on the bbq porch where it says you can't smoke and we could smell it inside. This is a cool old building and it's close to everything. Great if you like to mountain bike or party. We weren't going to write a review. We're not in the area a lot and we'll stay somewhere else. But we overheard the owner and staff making fun of guests 'who don't even ride...
Read moreThis hostel occupies the first floor (upstairs, as it were) of the old hardware shop. ||The dorms are very spacious. ||The plentiful bathrooms are huge, containing shower / bath, handbasin & loo. In other words you lock the down & it's all yours; no cramped shower / loo cubicles.||The kitchen is spacious & contains everything you need to prepare meals.||There's a pleasant little dining area just off the kitchen, and the common room is massive; occupying front of the building, with 3 windows overlooking the charming main street, lots of comfy sofas, pool, darts, board games, a fireplace, etc.||Everything is immaculately clean, and the decor is sort of 'early settler', including the old hardware shop safe. There are nice little touches like pot plants and paintings decorating the hostel. This is a very popular spot with biking riding enthusiasts, so there's a bike decorating the outside wall, and a 1950's tricycle sits on the safe.||The lady in charge is really nice & friendly & welcoming, as well as being a font of information.||The bike riding crowd staying with you are super friendly and laid back.||The location, on the main street, makes finding the hostel a snip.... and whatever you want: a stroll around the beautifully restored old buildings, coffee, beer in the beer garden, a meal or even a dough-nought at the famous dough-nought / bakery... is all within a minute or two on foot.||If you're driving, there's ample parking all around the hostel; this is a small town, so there's no need to request special on site parking at the hostel.||In short;...
Read moreMy wife and I booked for Labour Day weekend and this was the cheapest place around, so honestly we weren't expecting much. We left feeling like we got way more than we paid for.||We ended up staying two individual nights, the first in the male-dorm-turned-private-room and the second in a private "family" room. Both rooms were large, clean and nicely decorated in rustic chic style, and the bathrooms were kept impeccably clean for our entire stay despite the facility being fully booked. Maybe we just had good neighbors, but everyone was quiet after 11 and we slept well without hearing our neighbors.||We loved the historic downtown building, massive common area upstairs (the "ballroom"), and the well-stocked and clean kitchen. Check-in and check-out were super easy, with key codes provided ahead of both stays.||COVID precautions were clearly posted throughout the property and handwashing tips over the bathroom sinks, making us feel safe staying during the pandemic. Everyone we met was wearing masks in areas where they'd come in contact with others.||I wouldn't hesitate to book again -- this...
